OLD FASHIONED WAY Mark Denunzio Medium of Heavy Plunge and Wins His Backers on Anxious Seat as He Staggers Home Victor by a Nose HAVANA Cuba January 5 Mark Denun ¬ zio the fiv3yearold gelding by Martinet Cascabel which races under the colors of C L Enyat was made the medium of heavy backing at Oriental Park this afternoon and beat Lady Heart by the shortest of margins in the second race raceMark Mark Denunzio was backed from 10 to 1 to 3 to 1 and ridden by E H Barnes staggered home a nose in front of Lady Heart In tho early running Mark Denunzio forced the pace and when Chevalier tired in the final eighth moved up and took command but at the end was hard driven to last long enough to get the verdict from the fast finishing Lady Heart HeartWellbacked Wellbacked horses won the majority of the other races and the layers scored the heav ¬ iest losses cf the meeting Light showers fell during the morning and heavy clouds overhung the course all the afternoon But the track was in good condition and there were but few withdrawals withdrawalsConfederacy Confederacy the favorite in the opening dash won all the way Pickens sent him into a commanding lead in the first quarter and in the stretch run where Our Tellie chal ¬ lenged him he had plenty left to stall off the latter and at the end drew away again againDiscussion Discussion came all around his opponents to win the third race beating Valentine dOr by half a length in a driving finish Miss Caltha was the early pacemaker but retired after going a half when Memphis took the lead The latter tired in the stretch and then Discussion and Valentine dOr fought it out with the abovementioned result resultMAX MAX GOLD POUNDS BEST BESTMax Max Gold a firsttime starter at this meet ¬ ing was winner of the fourth race at five and a half furlongs He was away slowly but quickly made up ground and although coming wide entering the homestretch took the lead and drew away while swerving bad ¬ ly all through the last eighth He was pounds best and had he run straight and true would have scored easily easilyThe The most pretentious race of the afternoon was the fifth at a mile and fifty yards in which The Pirate scored a lucky victory victoryStutts Stutts rode a heady race on the winner when he permitted Col Chile to take the lead in the backstretch When the latter made a wide turn entering the homestretch Stutts sent The Pirate up on the inside and finished next to the inside rail to beat Col Chile by a half length in the fifth race which should have been won by Col Chile ChileThe The threeyearold Conundrum was sold by M Bernard to C White and started under the colors of his new owner in todays first race raceWilliam William Karrick one of the bestknown American trainers arrived here from New York today and was a visitor at the track this afternoon He will remain about a month as the guest of his son Kenneth Karrick who is training the Cuban division of the W R Coe stable Mr Karrick re ¬ ported that Mr Coe intended going abroad next month and will remain away for about three weeks weeksFor For the first time in the history of Cuban racing the colors of a Chinaman were car ¬ ried to victory this afternoon when Discus ¬ sion scored in the third race This aged son of Hanbridge from Coloquy is owned by Joe Fon Gon who in addition to his racing stable of four horses conducts the Oriental Hotel restaurant which is situated just out ¬ side of the main gate of the local track O L Foster has charge of the horses owned by the former citizen of the Celestial empire Discussion was secured by his present owner out of a claiming race several weeks ago
