Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan 18 1903 Sunday no racing racingOf Of the races that were run on the flat in England in 1902 there were 516 for twoyear j olds of which 442 were run at distances under threequarters sixtyfour of them three quarters and over but under a mile and ten of them at a mile In 1901 there were 508 races for twoyearolds and 497 in 1900 The 10000 Flatbush Stakes probably the most important twoyearold stake to be run at the Sheepshead Bay autumn meeting has a total of seventythree nominations nineteen more than last year and the 10000 Double Event has a total of 126 seven more than last year The June Handicap nominations arc increased from seventyfour to 114 forty more than last year The list of nominations to the Coney Island Jockey Club stakes shows that with the ex ¬ ception of one or two twoyearold stakes the entries to which were phenomenally large last year all are greatly increased in number the total to the several events being 2816 as against 2554 last year The Great Trial of 25000 just falls one short of the showing of 11902 numbering 144 To the Futurity of j905 there is a total of 1161 nominations thirtythree more than in 1902 1902While While the majority of the Sheepshead Bay stakes are increased in value by reason of the big entry lists the notable feature to the rac ¬ ing public is that fact that the Suburban SuburbanHandicap Handicap will probably ba worth over 19000 19000When When the amount of added money to the Suburban was made 10000 it was estimated that the Suburban would approximate up to 19000 and may reach 19500 Besides the Suburban both the Brooklyn and Brighton Handicaps which were made 10000 added money stakes will also come near the 19000 figure of the Coney Island Jockey Club event and it would not be surprising to see theso three handicaps pass the 20000 mark in an ¬ other year The 19000 estimate placed on the Suburban by the Coney Island Jockey Clubs secretary is based on a probable list of starters of twelve or thirteen That there will be this field appears to be reasonable consid ¬ ering the fact that there are eightyeight nom ¬ inations This is an increase of thirty over last year when the total was fiftyeight The Brooklyn has seventynine entries as against fiftynine and the Brighton eightythree as against fortyone last year Thus the three popular events are greatly enhanced in value as well as in general interest and providing the horses nominated come on and train well there is a good prospect that the stakes will prove contests of merit far superior to those of late years
