DAY OF FINE RACING Fair Grounds Patrons Treated to HotlyFought Finishes Best Pal Wins the Feature in Fast FastTime Time Shamrock Beaten Beatenby by Inches NEW ORLEANS La January 27 To ¬ days splendid program was replete with features and coupled with delightful weather and a fast track it was only natural that the largest crowd outside of the opening day should be on hand to view the racing No better racing has been on tap anywhere than that of this afternoon Each contest brought a thrill to the big throng the fin ¬ ishes in most instances being of the hair ¬ line variety some being so close that no one outside of the placing judges could determine the result resultOne One of these extremely close finishes came in the fifth race and the placing brought dis ¬ sension and a demonstration that lasted for quite a period Jack Hare Jr Gem and Fantoche finished the mile and an eighth journey noses apart Jack Hare Jr was on the inside Gem in the center and Fantoche on the outside Fantoche twenty yards from the finish looked all over the winner for he was then a head in front Owens sit ¬ ting like a statue on him and Gem and Jack Hare Jr responding resolutely to their rid ¬ ers urging but to all appearances unequal to again heading Fantoche The trio flashed past the finish noses apart and the judges awarded Jack Hare Jr the victory with Gem in second place Instantly there was a shout of disapproval The officials however wero correct for Corcoran on Jack Hare Jr had forced his mount past the others in the last stride The tumult died down as soon as the official ign was posted Aside from the close finish the race furnished one of the gamest exhibitions by a thoroughbred on the part of the crippled Jack Hare Jr In the early running he had sprinted into a long lead and seemingly was done for when reaching the last eighth but he held on In bulldog style and was deserving of his success for his gameness gamenessCOMIC COMIC SONG TIRES BADLY BADLYThe The outstanding race was the Hausmann Handicap at a mile for which a purse of l2uO was provided and a cup that also went to the winner the gift of Hausmann Brothers for whom th race was named It again brought Best Pal prominently to the fore that racer triumphing in a game race under an import of 122 pounds over Sir Thomas Kean with Irish Kiss in third place Comic Song recently the conqueror of Best Pal tired badly Romanelli rode Best Pal with rare judgment and the horse and rider were given an ovation on their return to the scales scalesJockey Jockey Pool was much in the limelight during the afternoon and rode three of the winners and the second horse in another clash He only had four months He inaugu ¬ rated his success with John Q Kelly fol ¬ lowed it with a victory on Translate then brought Sir Thomas Kean in second and finished his afternoons work in the last race with a win on Magician MagicianMagician Magician headed his opponents when rounding into the stretch and Pools good horsemanship kept him in front to the fin ¬ ish ishThe The opener brought an upset when Pietrus and Dr T S Dabney never figured to any serious extent the purse going to The Peru ¬ vian with the outsiders Fluff and Bobby Allen in second and third places Pietrus was always back in the ruck and any chance that Dr T S Dabney might have had went glimmering as a result of Merimees pulljng up propensities He took him back in the first threeeighths and the horse tired after ¬ ward wardPOOLS POOLS SPLENDID RIDING RIDINGThe The second race a threequarters dash brought to the barrier several good three yearolds including the highly regarded Shamrock The latter was installed an over ¬ whelming favorite He ran a game race but the finish found him badly inaucwuTone the finish found him beaten a neck by John Q Kelly Pool rode the latter in excellent fashion and kept him in front from the start but Shamrock was threatening all through the last eighth Had the jockeys been re ¬ versed Shamrock would have won Prince of Umbria landed in third place and ran a good race raceTranslate Translate was held at a short price in the third He made good and won easily from IEffare with Centimeter making his first start at the meeting in third place His se ¬ curing that portion of the purse was in the main due to McDcrmott taking My Reverie up on the lower turn until she was in last
