PREPARING AT HAWTHORNE House Cleaning Already Under Way To Erect Large Sta ¬ dium and New Stables Now that the dates for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes have been agreed upon plans for the opening date at Haw ¬ thorne May 26 following these two great events will go forward without delay delayJudge Judge Murphy has announced that he may act as presiding judge and other stewards and officials who will act without pay ac ¬ cepting only an honorarium will include three wellknown Chicago business men menThe The Hawthorne meeting will be conducted under the supervision of the Illinois Jockey Club and will continue for twentyfive days Secretary and general manager Thomas E Bourke has already started house cleaning with a crew of twentyfive carpenters deco ¬ rators and laborers No outside capital will be needed as it is said members of the club have set aside an appropriation of 40000 for general improvement work workOwners Owners of several large stables have prom ¬ ised to ship some of the bestknown horses now racing at Tijuana and New Orleans Races will be for purses of not less than 1000 Two races for 10000 each will take place during the meeting one of which will be arranged the same as last year by the hotel men of Chicago and be run as the Hotel Mens Handicap HandicapConcessionaires Concessionaires Rifas and Fox wellknown restaurant owners and caterers have signed a contract to spend 10000 in improvements in the restaurant building under the grand ¬ stand standArchitect Architect and builder A T Turnbull 11G North LaSalle street will begin work Mon ¬ day on a new stadium at the east end of the paddock This will seat an additional 15000 persons comfortably The foundation of concrete is already finished and further construction work will make it possible to have this new improvement ready long be ¬ fore the opening date dateSecretary Secretary Bourke has moved his offices from the Garrick Theater Building to Haw ¬ thorne so that he can more closely super ¬ vise the work Within a few weeks con ¬ dition books will be completed and distrib ¬ uted among the horsemen while work of building three new additional stables to house over 250 horses will start next week These will be built out of the lumber recently purchased from the government By making a few small changes in one of the large government buildings erecting stalls and removing the floor provision is being made for enough space to house another 300 head of horses By the time the work on all tha other stables is finished Hawthorne officials announce there will be a capacity for over 1000 head of horses without crowding This number is larger than now being cared for at any of the other tracks and will be encour ¬ aging to horsemen planning to ship here hereAt At the top of the grandstand is n large spacious and well constructed room 100 by 100 feet in dimension Work has begun to fit this room as a ladies rest room Tho grandstand stables and buildings will all be repainted after work of building an inner rail on the outside fence is completed
