RECORDS DOUBLE VICTORY Catharine Marrone and Paisley Bring Trainer Into Limelight CorncnUer Continues Winning AVay Three ThreeStraight Straight for Duo de Guise Fickle FickleFancy Fancy at Long Odds SAX DIEGO Cal January 27 Giving weight to several of her opponents acting somewhat unruly at the post as is her cus ¬ tom but when once away getting her nose in front to never lower her colors Catharine Marrone trained by Lonnie Tryon Chester ¬ field of the western turf Friday afternoon at the Tijuana track won the feature It was an even mile and the winner carried 107 pounds She was installed a 7 to 10 favorite in the books and when the talent attempted to select something to beat her the price was lengthened out in the machines so that the mutuel board displayed 110 to 1 on her herNearest Nearest to Catharine Marrpne for most of the journey was Bowsprit carrying the red and white of C B Irwin This colt with his light impost of only ninety pounds ran a good race but tired right near the end and thereby lost second place to Dorius the real outsider of the race Crystal Ford which was made second choice did not run kindly and was never prominent prominentThe The victory of Catharine Marrone was the second winner of the afternoon saddled by Trypn for just previous to this race he sent Paisley to the post to be triumphant in the fifth race at fiveeighths Here again a Tryon horse gave away weight for Paisley carried 118 pounds and closest to him in im ¬ post was Jack Bauer with 105 running for Colonel R L Baker of Kentucky The lat ¬ ter finished second with Carlos Enrique with only a feather on his back getting third place placeP P AISLE YS SPEED DISPLAY DISPLAYFrom From a time standpoint Paisleys accom ¬ plishment was a smashing one as the track was more than fetlock deep in slush and yet this colt after a tedious delay at the barrier for which he was mainly responsible picked up his 118 pounds and ran the five eighths in the good time of 1 01 This is only two seconds slower than the track record of 59 which is held by Phrone Ward Paisleys unruly actions probably stood him in good stead and while he did not have any great advantage at the start his be ¬ havior worked a handicap to three of his opponents This resulted in Reap Cedric and Virginius being away poorly The race was of such short duration and the winner had such a high turn of speed that the three unfortunate ones it might be said lost all chance at the start startMarvelous Marvelous is this old campaigner Corn cutter It was believed by many that after his two victories in as many straight days for C B Irwin that he would not be at his best after being claimed Thursday by Pete Clausen However change in colors made no difference and he has as much speed un ¬ der the red and white stars of his new owner as he displayed when carrying the YP insignia of the AVyoming horseman The victory Friday of Corncutler was clean cut as his name would signify for he was away like a flash and merely cantered in front of all others to ultimately win by three lengths This Ccrncutter in a way would seem to be another Harry D stamp of horse It is well known that he was one of the pets of the big Irwin establishment and Mrs Irwin spoke sympathetically of his good deeds when the stable lost him Thursday In the off season of racing in the West Corn cutter was not an idle thoroughbred He was not born with a golden spoon in his mouth for during the summer he was used in the rodeo shows which Irwin operated He was always employed by the horseman to run the final lap in a relay race and with Miss Pauline Irwin daughter of the owner on his back Corncutter has scored many a Continued on eleventh page RECORDS DOUBLE VICTORY Continue from Grst page victory where the grass from View and Krmitana The aged mare was capably ridden by the largest apprentice jockey G Rose and in paying better than 16 to 1 she proved to be the longestpriced winner of the day dayThe The talent was woefully out of line in the second race when they placed their faith In Emma Weller Joe Campbell and My Laddie for none of them finished in the money First honors fell to Veiled Colleen with the long shot Canvasback and Marion Fluke next in order orderDue Due de Guise made it three straight when he captured the major portion of the purse in the eighth race at five and onehalf fur ¬ longs Neg was installed the favorite but he never figured in the running being far back at the finish finishJockey Jockey C Thompson and Double Eye were a winning combination in the opener at threequarters for
