SECURE ILLINOIS CHARTER Chicago Washington Park Club ClubIncorporates Incorporates Prominent ProminentMen Men Elected Directors It was recently announced that an organ ¬ ization composed of influential citizens of Chicago had made arrangements to take over the charter of the Washington Park Jockey Club for the purpose of reestablishing rac ¬ ing here on a high plane However just when negotiations had practically been com ¬ pleted for the transfer of the charter the deal fell through throughUndaunted Undaunted these gentlemen decided to se ¬ cure a charter of their own and as a result the Chicago Washington Park Club was in ¬ corporated in Springfield last week not for pecuniary profit but for the encouragement of clean and healthful horse racing Messrs Arthur Meeker Stanley Field Silas H Strawn John Borden and Major Frederic McLaughlin are the directors of the new club and it is proposed to enlarge the di ¬ rectorate to twentyone and to fill it by other equally representative men of Illinois IllinoisIn In the near future an office of the club will be opened in Chicago and the club will proceed to recruit at least 500 members from among those interested in bringing clean horse racing back to Illinois The club will incur nothing more than nominal expense until it is assured of satisfactory legislation which will permit lawful racing on a basis which will pay expenses as well as stakes and purses which will attract the best horses The club will be run along the line of the old Washington Park Club and will endeavor to restore to Illinois the fame and prominence of the old American Derby DerbyThis This is not a commercial venture The club will not be run for profit If it is found necessary in the conduct of racing to make use of an operating company which can make the large investment necessary for a track of the first class the profits of the operating company will be strictly limited to a reasonable return on the money in ¬ vested
