FAVORITES IN ASCENDENCY Six First Choices in Triumph at Tijuana Thursday JocSey W Pool Miraculously Escapes Serious Injury Costly Southern Gentleman Fin ¬ ally 3Ianages to Win a Race SAN DIEGO Cal February 9 Formful indeed was the racing at Tijuana Thursday The story can best be told when it is men ¬ tioned that six favorites a second and a third choice accounted for the card of eight races This too in spite of the fact that the program was devoid of a feature attraction and was given over to the thoroughbreds which belong in the claiming races racesThreatening Threatening skies and an ordinary pro ¬ gram did not seem to keep down the attend ¬ ance to any appreciable amount and a crowd of average number invaded the domain of the runner across the border Those who made the journey liad a profitable afternoon and after the day was over wended their way back to the States wearing the smile that goes with the winner winnerThe The outstanding incident of the afternoon was the spectacular fall taken by jockey Pool in the opening dash in which the star rider miraculously escaped without a scratch This accident occurred in full view of the grandstand and when the lad was plunged to the ground the crowd gave vent to exclama ¬ tions of fear and dismay as Pool was thrown prone in the path of the other starters For a moment it appeared certain that he would be struck by the flying feet of the thorough ¬ breds but fate decreed otherwise and not a horse touciied him himPLUCKY PLUCKY AND COURAGEOUS COURAGEOUSPool Pool had the mount on Colonel R Li Bak ¬ ers May Bruen and as the band of eleven turned into the stretch his mount was in third position Riding with the energy which has featured his saddle work here the filly answered to his urging and was closing up ground on the leaders At the seventyyard post it looked as if victory was within her grasp but at this point May Bruen stum ¬ bled and Pool losing his balance went over her head taking the bridle with him Stunned he lay directly in the path of those behind but the hand of destiny steered every horse away from him The crack jockey was hurriedly carried to the track hospital where it was found that aside from a shaking up he was none the worse for his trying ex ¬ perience As an evidence of the pluck and indomitable courage of the lad Pool begged to be allowed to finish out his engagements during the afternoon but his employer Col ¬ onel R L Baker insisted that he cancel them Queencup II which with Spring Ronnett and May Bruen were coupled in the field and ruled the favorites won the race by three lengths from Smile Again and Elmer W WBabe Babe Ruth which was to have been ridden by jockey Pool with Walls as his substitute made her opponents look cheap in the sec ¬ ond With only ninetysix pounds on her back the filly was heavily backed in both the Continued on twelfth pace FAVORITES IN ASCENDANCY Contnned from first page machines and the books and led by a wide margin throughout to ultimately win by five lengths eased up from GallouBerry and Tempy Duncan DuncanAfter After many reverses the socalled gold brick horse Southern Gentleman finally found a spot where he could earn his oats and captured the long end of the purse from Joe Campbell and Hunters Point Southern Gentleman was once sold in the auction ring for 24500 Great deeds were expected of this glittering prospect but he proved that all that glitters is not gold by turning out to be a dismal failure Race after race he ran eventually in the cheapest kind of com ¬ pany but he always finished so far back that he never got dusty Then came his race yesterday when he managed to scamper home a winner over as a poor a band as could be mustered together The case of Southern Gentleman is just another example of the vagaries of racing racingIt It was in the third race that jockey W Martin suffered a nasty fall which ren ¬ dered him unconscious Martin had the mount on Marion Hollins and as the field of twelve left the barrier the mare was caught in a jam and the boy was thrown heavily to the ground Martin revived quick ¬ ly but like Pool was forced to cancel the remainder of his engagements for the after ¬ noon By a strange coincidence Pool would have been astride Marion Hollins had he not had the mishap in an earlier race raceThe The best field of horses of the day paraded in the sixth race a dash of threequarters miie in which Polly Wale from the San Diego Stable was installed a topheavy favorite Capably ridden by jockey C Thompson the daughter of Uncle waited on Fireplace the pacemaker until after enter ¬ ing the stretch where she came on to win by two lengths Fireplace hung on long enough to take second money from the fast closing Marcella Boy BoyAryanna Aryanna added another purse to the win ¬ nings of the McLean and Gibson racing establishment by taking the fifth race in a busy finish from Dark Ages and Endive However it cost the victors their mare as B F McLain lodged a claim for her and led the mare to his barn for 1100 1100J J X Wilson and Mrs Wilson of Cheyenne Wyo were arrivals today to spend a brief holiday the guests of C B Irwin Mr Wil ¬ son is a noted breeder of
