named for J S McCandless Imperial Potentate of the Shriners in this country and to which was added an ornate cup as well as a purse of 1200 was the feature of todays card and the Shriners here honoring their leader made a gala occasion of it and came to the track in force augment ¬ ing the large visiting crowd here for the Mardi Gras festivities The Imperial Po ¬ tentate and his escort witnessed the running of the race as guests of the stewards stewardsCalcutta Calcutta favored by light weight and rac ¬ ing in his best form was returned the winner of the race after a thrilling battle with another threeyearold Vennie The favorite Crack o Dawn landed in third place The latter was in command from the start at ¬ tended closely by Calcutta the pair being a good way in advance of the others during the first half mile In the last quarter Vennie came with a rush and at this juncture Crack o Dawn showed signs of weakening This enabled Calcutta to move up and in the stretch duel that followed Calcutta held to his task gamely and outstayed Vennie by a length Vennie also beat Crack o Dawn by a length lengthMUD MUD RUNNERS IN GLORY GLORYThreatening Threatening weather was again
