Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 13 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Ingle Jockeys Odom and Lindsey scored double wins during the afternoon at New Orleans Jockey Mountain swept the card from the third race on at Newport There are only five races daily at this track At the Inglcade track the most important importantrace race of the day was the fifth which was an overnight handicap The bugle call was nswered by six of the best horses at the track Princess Titania Stuyve Honiton Ken ilworth Byron Rose and Sad Sam Princess Titania owned by J D Millin was made the favorite and running in second position for the first half mile she took command there and won as her rider pleased In justice to the other contenders in this race the start was not all that could be desired for Princess Ti tania and Sad Sam were off to a lucky start Honiton and the others being virtually left at ths post Honiton ran a dull race and looked as though a few hard races would do him himgood good Eastern turfmen are manifesting unusual interest in the entry list for the American erby made public yesterday for the reason that it promises to be a greater race than ever before inasmuch as the best threeyear olds in the country have been named includ ¬ ing those owned by August Belmont R T Wil ¬ son Jr Whitney Duryea P J Dwyer P H McCarren F R Hitchcock and J E Madden and all of whom race here year after year in preference to other parts of the land Mr Belmont has entered his promising Hast ngs colt Lord of the Vale which ran second to Savable in the Futurity and defeated Ser ¬ geant in the Consolation Stakes at Bennings i last fall Mr Wilson who tried to win the Derby year before last with The Parader has entered the Mirthful colt Mexican which won the Produce Stakes and other rich fixtures last year in the colors of C H Mackay Mr Wil ¬ son has also named Grantsdale a colt which did not do much racing last year Whitney Duryea who will race in the future under the name of the Westbury Stable have en tered Irish Lad the son of Candlemas Arrow grass which won among other important events last year the rich Saratoga Special and which recently received ths highest recog ¬ nition as a threeyearold in W S Vosburghs allotment of weights for the big eastern han ¬ dicaps Mr Dwyer has entered his Hand ¬ spring colt Merry Acrobat which developed rapidly last fall winning the White Plains Handicap and is believed by his owner to be a second Major Daingerficld Senator McCar rens representative is the colt Mackay Dwyer which showed an ability to go over a long route last fall so successfully that great things are expected of him this year F R Hitch ¬ cock has nominated his speedy gelding Grey Friar which took the measure of Acefull in the Matron Stakes at Morris Park last fall and also won the Albany Handicap at Saratoga performances which with others convinced many turfmen that the son of St George Una B was pretty nearly the best twoyear old of the year John E Madden though Pentecost could not get a slice of the money a year ago has again set his cap for the Derby and has named Yardarm Onatas and Dauphin With this array of talent the East appears to be well represented in fact more formidable than ever before
