APPRENTICE IN LIMELIGHT Jockey F Cantrell Observes 17th Birthday by Three Wins Iron Horse Harry B Gets Revenge for forDefeat Defeat of Tuesday Hazel Bale AVins AVinsfor for Second Bay in Succession SAX DIEGO Cal February 15 Birth ¬ days may come and birthdays may go but theres a redfaced chap in these parts and a rider too who will long have cause to remember the fourteenth day of February 1923 This beardless youth is Freddie Can ¬ trell of Toppenish Wash A youth who aspires to fame in the saddle and who from his performance of yesterday afternoon is well on his way to become a good rider of thoroughbreds It was his seventeenth birth ¬ day and he made the observance of his natal day quite keen indeed by riding three win ¬ ners nersThere There are three principals in this cast First is C B Irwin who recently purchased Cantrells contract from Vernon Cloud at a reported price of 5000 The second is the grand old campaigner Harry D and the third is young Mister Cantrell himself himselfThat That boy can ride and will make a joc ¬ key mused Irwin the other day as he pur ¬ chased the document proclaiming that for a time at least Cantrell will carry the well known YC insignia of the Wyoming owner Then Irwin discovered that the youth was having a birthday on this Wednesday and straightforth he allotted him three mounts In no instance did he fail failWhile While Cantrells success was somewhat instantaneous with the opening of Tijuanas program for Wednesday afternoon when he rode the colt El Roble to victory in the in ¬ itial race after his mount had been prac ¬ tically left at the post his best work was I astride the iron horse Harry D which j was returned a winner after tasting defeat Tuesday from Judge Pryor PryorCHEAT CHEAT OArATIOX FOR HARUT B BCheers Cheers are given frequently on a race track for a triumphant horse Ears never recorded the din which greeted Harry D in i victory yesterday afternoon He had been deposed from his throne Tuesday but yes ¬ terday was another day and he was the usurper by the narrowest of margins and then he beat that highly thought of colt from Kentucky lack Bauer which carried the colors of Colonel II L Baker and also jockey W Pool rated by many critical judges as one of the most promising saddle prospects in the country countryTo To top it all off and sort of add polish to his first two accomplishments this boy Can ¬ trell finished the afternoon by riding Hazel Dale to victory victoryThen Then we turn to the afternoons feature featurein in which Harry D had the opportunity to retrieve lost laurels Tuesday he was a hero heroi i in defeat Wednesday there were not enougi j laurel wreaths to fittingly record his four fourI I teenth victory of the meeting j meetingj Harry D made no mistakes at the post postHe He was first to show his bald face and held helda a head advantage over Incognance until the thefield field was turning for home Then he CVntinucd o third page APPRENTICE IN LIMELIGHT Continued from first page stretched it out to a neck Here Incognanco had enough and retired and then came Jack Bauer with a belated rush in the stretch It was a thrilling spectacle Harry D was battling again and jockey Pool on Jack Kauer Avas riding with all the tools at his command commandWill Will they beat Harry B The question echoed forth throughout the grandstand A few yards from the linish it appeared that the Baker runner would do it But Harry D was still fighting Just a yard from the end ho seemed to nod his head a trifle deeper than usual AVas he stumbling Then came one of the greatest efforts of his career He gathered his all and Cantrcll steadied him That glorious rush and victory was his Ha won by a nose while Jack Bauer proving much the better of the remainder was second by two lengths from Full Moon which had to battle hard to hold third place by a nose from Incognance The third score for Cantrell was recorded when Hazel Daie a winner of Tuesday camo came right back and accounted for the sev ¬ enth race at four and a half furlongs Thu rider had Hazel Dale away in front and she had no serious opposition being victorious by a length lengthIn In the concluding race of the card it Avas again established that the offspring of Gen ¬ eral Roberts California sire will do well in the mud The Avinner was Liittle Florence by General Roberts Lori Nit a Jockey Thompson made no mistakes and rating tho filly to perfection she took the lead at the head of the stretch and then Avas merely cantering to win by four and a half lengths Delhimar was second and Doctor Tubbs was third thirdThe The colt Jncognance Avas claimed out of the sixth race by J McGinn for 1700 1700There There Avere two claims in tho last race T McGinn Avas busy again and took Sam Reh for 1300 Delhimar waw claimed by Z U McGregor for 1300 1300H H Avas announced yesterday that the colt Doubtful Avas purchased by J H McCoolo from Commander J K L Ross It Avas a private sale the purchase price not being announced
