Here and There on the Turf Latonia Derby Weights Are AreChanged Changed Allowances but No More MorePenalties Penalties Chance for Racing in State Stateof of Washington The change in the conditions of the La Ionia Derby cannot fail to be popular with the horsemen This is the one Derby in this country that is over the full mile and a half distance and the change gives a fivepound allowance to nonwinners of a threeyearold stake of 25000 This taking the other view means that the winner of the Kentucky Darby Preakness Stakes or Belmont Stakes will be required to take up the scale weight of 126 pounds Then nonwinners of 5000 are al ¬ lowed eight pounds and maidens have an al ¬ lowance of twelve pounds poundsThis This will make the weights for the 1923 race 120 121 118 and 114 pounds Of course this is a departure from a strict interpreta ¬ tion of just what a Derby means but it is a change that should make a way for larger fields than have bsen usual in the La ¬ tonia Derby To race a mile and a half under the scale weightforage is considerable of a task for the best threeyearold of a year and many an owner who would hesitate to take a job for his colt would send him to the post under one of the lighter weights weightsSince Since 1883 when the Latonia Derby was inaugurated it has been won by the winner of the Kentucky Derby on five different oc ¬ casions and in each the winner of the Chur ¬ chill Downs race has taken up a penalty for the Latonia race raceLeonatus Leonatus winner of the first Latonia Derby carried 110 pounds after he had won the Ken ¬ tucky Derby under 105 pounds poundsIn In 1S91 Kingman was the winner of both races carrying 121 pounds in the Kentucky Derby and 128 in the Latonia Derby DerbyIn In 189G Ben Brush won at Louisville under 117 pounds and then carried 122 to victory at Latonia LatoniaLieutenant Lieutenant Gibson won the Kentucky Derby of 1900 under 117 pounds and walked over for the later race under 127 pounds poundsThe The last winner of both old races was El wood and after he had won the Kentucky Derby under 117 he repeated in the Latonia Derby with 127 pounds as his burden burdenFor For the past three years there have been penalties without allowances Thus it was that after Bzhave Yourself won the Kentucky Derby under 12G pounds he had to shoulder a fivepound penaltj bringing his Latonia weight to 131 pounds He failed to give away the weight and was beaten by Brother Batch under 126 pounds poundsThus Thus the change is to scale the weights down instead of up for the Latonia Derby For a mile and a half race the idea is that a threeyearold should not be asked to shoulder more than his scale weight The man with a good maiden will have twelve pounds ad ¬ vantage in the weights over a winner of the Kentucky Derby or other races of like value Just as the nonwinner of 85000 will have an advantage over the winners of a greater The change seems sure to call for more lib ¬ eral entries a larger field going to the post and now and then a better contest Later in the year the strictly weightforage races have a real place and it is well that the champion should have opportunities to prove his worth at equal weights with the others but in the early racing the allowances have this place Allowances when framed as ars those fcr the Latonia Derby are well conceived Away out West in the state of Washington there is a concerted effort being made by own ¬ ers and breeders to have racing A law is being proposed to make the sport secure There are men of importance and wealth back of the project and it appears hopeful that this law will be enacted In the meantime Wash ¬ ington has its thoroughbred breeders and with racing established in the state it would give a new impetus to the important industry of thoroughbred horse production productionG G Drumheller of Walla Walla h one of these breeders who are working to bring racing to the state on a firm basis Recently Mr Drum heller purchased the fast horse Gladiator from J L Holland and it is intended that he will head the Drumheller Washington stud This sixyearold son of Superman and Lotawanna by Trenton has proved himself a highcla s campaigner He is a magnificentappearing individual and with the mares with which Mr Drumhelhr will stock his farm he should prove a successful sire Last Effort and My Reverie are two of the mares that have been purchased recently at New Orleans as mates for Glada tor and there vull be several other purchases made madeThe The plans that have been outlined for racing in Washington contemplate a track at Walla Walla as a part of the circuit that is to take in important cities in the entire state stateWith With the other plans for racing on the Pa ¬ cific slope that have been going forward for some time it would appear that racing is to probably come back in earnest in the far West Time was when a circuit of high im ¬ portance thrived west of the Rockies and the turfmen who have the revival in purpose this time propose bringing racing back en a basis that should be lasting
