FIRST ALL THE WAY George Kuffan Easily Accounts for Maine Memorial Handicap Different Eyes Scores by Narrow NarrowMargin Margin Redmon in Front FrontAfter After Many Attempts HAVANA Cuba February 15 The Cuba American Jockey and Auto Club offered tha Maine Memorial Handicap as the principal racing attraction at Oriental Park today It was a fastrun race but the usual thrilhi were lacking owing to the easy success of E L Fitzgeralds George Kuffan a son of Huon Jessie AVoodson AVoodsonDashing Dashing away in the lead the Fitzgerald color bearer set his opponents a merry pace going the half in 112 45 and the mile in 139 25 Instead of tiring George Kuffan increased his advantage in the last eighth and won in a canter by five lengths He was a warm favorite although strong support at post time sent Fincastle cdds tumbling down from 3 to 1 to S to 5 The latter ran well and might have been a more formidable factor had not East View bumped him at the halfmile post East View also ran a sparkling race but tried to bear out after going a half thereby ruining whatever chances he may have had to overtake the flying leader Nevertheless he finished gamely beating Fincastle by a head for pronounced choice in this con ¬ test but he liad his work cut out to score He did so eventually but only after the hardest kind of a closing drive and by a small margin marginForcing Forcing a fast pace Different Eyes passed the early leader in tho homestretch and drawing away appeared to have the race at his mercy Not so however as the former Stoneham racer tired in the final eighth and just lasted loug enough to earn the judges verdict by a neck Col Chile gaining with every stride strideIn In the race for Cubanbred juveniles the opening attraction the Caimito Stable for which W A Carter trains today introduced to the patrons of Oriental Park a promising twoyearold in Pilades a son of Orestes the royally bred Tracery horse imported to the United States and later sold to Seiior A II Diaz for whom he raced here in Cuba Pilades got away none too well in his initial appearance on the turf but once in his stride he made up ground quickly and overtaking his stable companion Hetty AV outgnmud her in a close finish Patsie S also a firsttime starter from the stable of F Stoinhart was third though tiring at tho end and just outlasting Claro Deluna DelunaAfter After five unsuccessful attempts in each of which he finished second E E Majors veteran racer Redmon got home first this afternoon He was an oddson choice in tha second race and simply ran away from his opponents Racing into the lead with tha rise of the barrier he showed the way under restraint to the far turn where given a free rein he opened a big gap which nearly proved his undoing AVith a sixlength ad ¬ vantage he entered the stretch then tired suddenly and his backers were on the anx ¬ ious seat for a few moments However he lasted long enough to win by two lengths from Far East which had trouble withstand ¬ ing the closing dash of Get Em EmBOBBEB BOBBEB HAIIl DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSBackers Backers of favorites who had hoped to make it three straight when they supported Bobbed Hair to the exclusion of all tho others in the third raco were doomed to disappointment although for a brief moment it appeared as if their hopes would be real ¬ ized Bobbed Hair was away slowly and outrun for a half then closed a big gap and almost got on even terms with the lead ¬ er Challenging gamely at the eighth post Bobbed Hair seemed to have an excellent chance of wresting the lead and eventually winning the race when he suddenly tired and Heliocrcss drew clear The latter led all the way and proved a decided surprise both from a speculation standpoint and from the way he successfully withstood the test of fire at the eighth post postThere There were more visitors American tourists at the races today than at any previous day of th J season The list included Mr Daniel Beach an attorney of Rochester N Y who was accompanied by his wife Eugene Con way tho hotel man of Philadelphia Mr and Mrs John McCaffrey of Brooklyn N Y Mr and Mrs Alex B Shepherd of Pittsburgh Pa and Dr John P Monroe of Charlotte N C CMr Mr conclusion of the Ori ¬ ental Park season Kelly will take the boy to Huntington to ride rideJ J Cliao the Cuban sportsman who re ¬ cently acquired the horses Split Grass American Legion and Swiftcricket will ship them Saturday to San Juan Porto Rico where they will be raced at the meeting now being conducted in that city cityCecil Cecil Knight owner of the horse Pana man was apprised yesterday of the serious illness of his father in Toronto Ont and will leave in the morning for that city
