FORM WELL OBSERVED Followers of Favorites Give Lay ¬ ers a Drubbing at Havana Edgar Allan Poe Easily Accounts Accountsfor for Mardi Gras Handicap Col Chile Wins HAVANA Cuba February 25 Form followers gave the layers a drubbing at Oriental Park today when favorites won the first four races some of them getting in by narrow margins while others won with plenty in reserve reserveThe The program was made up of seven races with the Mardi Gras Handicap as the feature attraction This was a dash of five and a half furlongs in which Edgar Allan Poc made his opponents look cheap He was ridden by AV Taylor set a fast pace from the start and after going a quarter drew away winning at the end by five lengths from Belle of Elizabethtown Perhaps was third two lengths further back and a head in front of Huron II the only other starter starterA A tremendous gathering turned out to wit ¬ ness the sport the crowd being made up mostly of tourists who are visiting Cuba this winter All the boxes were filled and the clubhouse balconies crowded with many prominent New Yorkers among the visitors visitorsThe The races were run over a fast track under threatening clouds but the rain held 01 until after the races were run runAfter After threatening to win in her last three appearances under colors the Golden Maxim mare Mary Reigel finally made good today when she was home first in the initial contest of the program Mary Reigel was a warm favorite but her admirers were kept on the anxious seat as she raced in close quarters to the stretch turn where she squeezed through between Big Noise and Red assum ing the lead and drawing clear in the last sixteenth First Pullet was second outstay ¬ ing Red after a spirited battle for second honors Big Noise quit badly in the last eighth after setting the early pace paceFAU FAU EAST A11RO1VLY A11RO1VLYAnother Another favorite triumphed in the second race Far East carrying the colors of the TriState Stable to a head victory over Sem pronia The winner set the pace from the start but never got far away from the others Mannchen racing in closest pursuit to the stretch where he tired Another formidable rival loomed up in the last eighth when Sem pronia after beginning slowly and being out ¬ run the first part of the race closed a big gap and just failed to overtake Far East the latter winning because best ridden at the end Brunner putting it all over Horn in a bril ¬ liant display of horsemanship horsemanshipCol Col Chile had to be best to win the third race After beginning on the outside lies carried Old Sinner along at a fast pace to the stretch turn where he bore out when straightened out for the final dash closing in resolute fashion and easily triumphing over his opponents beating Pony Express by a length and a half The latter was as far in front of Piegan which beat the rapidly closing Port Light by a head for the short end of the purse Old Sinner tired badly and finished last lastGrandson Grandson was the first favorite of the afternoon that failed to make good Burns sent him to the front at the turn into the backstretch and rated him in hand for seven eighths when AVoodstock sent Bounce to the leader with a rush and took command at the top of the stretch AVoodstock was a bit overanxious at the end and rode out Bounce to beat Grandson a length Ferrum was third throe lengths back of the latter latterPete Pete Cliristenson after spending a week at Havana returned to New Orleans yester ¬ day on his way to Tijuana TijuanaJoseph Joseph Pulitzer proprietor of the St Louis Post Dispatch wan a clubhouse visitor visitorJockey Jockey AVoodstock was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for rough riding on Bounce BounceJockey Jockey F Hunt was indefinitely suspended and his license revoked for unsatisfactory riding ridingA A distinguished party from New York in Which was included Mr and Mrs George W Ioft and Mr and Mrs B Harrington and Mr and Mrs M Blake were among those who visited the clubhouse today todayAV AV J Hughes J E Sullivan of Cincin ¬ nati and AV J Richmond of Covington Ky all personal friends of general manager Bruen arrived for a brief visit
