Here and There on the Turf Cosdens Dunlin and Martin ¬ gale Dangerous In Big Races to Come Dunlin winner of the Hopeful Stakes of last year and Martingale one of the best mud running twoyearolds of last year will prob ¬ ably be the dependencies of J S Cosden in both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby this year There is another in the string that may bs right up among the best threeyearolds of the year in Golden Rule son of Wrack and Golding by Flint Rock RockWilliam William Garth has a habit of coming to the races with fit horses and in 1920 he in ¬ vaded Kentucky with Blazes and Paul Jones and carried off the Kentucky Derby at Chur ¬ chill Downs On that occasion Blazes was the main dependence of the stable but the going was muddy and it was Paul Jones that turned the trick though Blazes himself had some reputation as a mud runner runnerThis This year as far as mudrunning ability is concerned the stable is as well equipped as it was in 1920 or better for there were few twoyearolds that could step with Mar ¬ tingale through muddy going last year Dun ¬ lin is probably a colt of better class over a fast track but with both in the stable Garth need have no worry over weather and track conditions for either the Preakness on May 12 or the Derby on May 19 19It It is the stables intention to try for both of the 50000 races and to that end the horses will be moved from the Virginia farm to Pimlico early in March MarchBilly Billy Garth has reported that the Cosden horses have wintered well and he has every hope they will be ready for racing in April so that there will be an opportunity to tighten up his Preakness and Derby candidates by actual racing before the dates for the big races fall due dueThe The string that will be campaigned this year will be one of the most notable that ever bore the Cosden silks and no stable has richer engagements in advance advanceBlazes Blazes a horse that has raced with dis ¬ tinction on the flat will be put through the field this year and he has already shown enough in his schooling to warrant the belief that he will be a highclass steeplechaser Few trainers have anything on Garth when it comes to educating and fitting a steeplechaser and few better horses than Blazes are raced through the field on this side of the Atlantic AtlanticOther Other of the flat runners of last year that will be sent through the field are Roulette Good Times and Big Heart HeartIn In addition to these jumpers Garth will also have a pair that will race under the silks of Ral Parr These are Sea Master a fouryear old colt that was the winner of the Elkridge Steeplechase last fall and the sixyearold Ireland Parrs silks will also be carried by four flat runners All of these are meant for an early Maryland start and past performances of Garth in early racing suggest that they will cut some figure in the sport There will be much interest in how Snob H will come back as a fouryearold for Garth and it is generally expected that the colt will justify the high price that was paid for him by Mr Cosden last year yearClarence Clarence Kummer and Chick1 Lang are again the stable jockeys while Charlie Merg ler will do much of the riding through the field
