RAPID VICTORHill DAY A VICTOR Hill MLP iris la viv axla Vanquishes Hadrian by Inches in a Decidedly Close Finish Fannie Bean Defeats Ralco in inAnother Another Close Call Body BodyGuard Guard Loses to Lady Myra NEW ORLEANS La March 13 A blanket finish with the three leading horses virtually neck and neck had the crowd at ¬ tending todays races in a frenzy of excite ¬ ment in the feature the Texas Handicap a threequarters dash Rapid Day the seven yearold gelding belonging to Mrs R Mc Garvey was first a nose in front of Hadrian in second place with Translate just behind in third place Louis A was the only other starter starterHadrian Hadrian the favorite was the pacemaker with Translate running second and Rapid Day third This position was maintained until the head of the stretch was reached where Rapid Day raced into second place Translate falling behind into the third place The horses then rushed down the stretch with Rapid Day and Translate getting up with Hadrian As they thundared across the finish line it was hard to distinguish which was the winner until the numbers were posted The horses were wildly acclaimed when they cantered back backSPHIXGLIKE SPHIXGLIKE WEATHER WEATHERRefreshing Refreshing breezes tempered the heat and made fine weather for outdoor diversions The crowd was large and the racing on a par with the best that has been offered here in the matter of close finishes Several of the dashes terminated in such close windups that none outside of the placing judges could determine accurately as to which had landed in front Usually in such cases there are disagreements with the placing judges Many thought Hadrian had won and in the fol ¬ lowing race there were those who declared Ralco had beaten Fannie Bean BeanThe The two were among the starters in the fifth race a mile and a sixteenth dash in which some highly regarded ones contested Raleo was always among the prominent con ¬ tenders in the early running but Fannie Bean was far back and ridden entremely wide by Costello She closed a big gap in the stretch and coming fast in game style near the end just reached and headed Ralco which had previously displaced Neddam Crack o Dawn and Rama The latter fin SWIIHVE COST RACE RACEAnother Another close finish came in the third race in which some Derby eligiblcs met at a mile with Body Guard the favored one He fiattered extensively and seemed the winner all ovor when a sixteenth from the finish but right here he took a swerve to ¬ wards the inner rail and Lady Myra coming with a rush under hard riding beat him out by a nose It was another close one and brought disagreement from some specta ¬ tors Lady Myras performance was in much improved form formBig Big fields of the more ordinary horses met in the first two dashes Sultan was the favored one in the opener and beat the eleven others to the finish after leading for the en ¬ tire nice niceArdito Ardito had the call in the second race but he was never in the running Stamp at long odds winning from Rtmnyol by a head headBarracuda Barracuda secured a rest from racing today on account of being unable to start in the fourth race raceC C Martin and F Holman were among those shipping to Bowie this afternoon 1 B Campbell will spend the time inter ¬ vening before the opening at Pimlico in fish ¬ ing along the Gulf coast coastEdward Edward Gray was worked an easy mile and an eighth for his race in the Derby Anonymous and All American also were galloped an easy mile and an eighth
