Here and There on the Turf Canadas Racing Situation Maidens Among Kentucky Derby Candidates Forty Entered Including IncludingHighPriced HighPriced Yearlings As matters now stand the only certainty in the Canadian racing situation is that the On ¬ tario Jockyc Club will give its usual spring meeting at Woodbine Park Nothing els3 is now in sight Practically this amounts to temporary abolition of the Canadian turf If this situation is not alleviated there will cer ¬ tainly be a great hole in the racing map at large The horses that heretofore have been annually campaigned in Canada will then have to find their employment on this side of the line That they will not be unwelcome may be taken for granted but those who have the welfare of racing at heart will deplore the necessity that enforces migration from their accustomed field of action actionThe The burdens left by the Great War are so heavy that the Canadian government is bound to make use of all available sources of revenue No one can reasonably object to its including racing in its field of taxation But the ex ¬ perience of 1922 seems to demonstrate that the levy was too heavy to be borne Obviously it would be better to reduce this levy to a degree that would permit the associations to give their usual meetings without loss in ¬ stead of sticking to a course that forces them to close their gates and thereby deprive the government of the robust aggregate sum de ¬ rived from racing last year No doubt the government is considering the matter For ¬ tunately giving the needed relief is an exe ¬ cutive exercise of authority that does not re ¬ quire legislative action It is this feature that engenders hope that relief may be given in time to induce the Canadian associations to give their customary meetings It is the most natural thing in the world when looking over the eligibles to the Ken ¬ tucky Derby to consider the chances of those that showed prominently as twoyearolds But there are forty maidens in the long list and of these sixteen were not brought to the post last year Those of the maidens that failed were considered good enough to have a chance for the rich race while nothing is known of the other sixteen except what they may have shown in private trials One thing is certain that each maiden that has been nomi ¬ nated was considered worthy of the engage ¬ ment There are the stars of last year to keep the student of past performances busy making his deductions Then after he is all through the unknown quality of these maidens lends an uncertainty that gives the race zest Most of the maidens that were raced last year that have been made eligible showed an abun ¬ dance of speed in their races and not a few of them had excellent excuses for defeat In addition to this the widespread epidemic of last year accounts for the number of maiden threeyearolds of Derby caliber The sickness was peculiarly prevalacnt among the twoycar clds and it virtually knocked out a number of them for the year yearAnd And the maidens are pretty well distributed among the nominators when it is found that twentyeight racing establishments have maid ¬ ens in their entries John E Madden has the greatest number of nonwinners Five of those he has nomi ¬ nated are maidens Of these three were not brought to the post as twoyearolds twoyearoldsJohn John Sanford has three maidens and two of ithem Aragon and Dalby were not raced The Salubria Stable also has three of which two Scoop and Mintstick have yet to be seen under silks silksThe The nominators with two maidens are the Greentrce Stable H P Whitney J B Mc ¬ Ginn and R E Yickerman Those with one each are C Weidemann H C Waterman Quincy Stable Darden Perkins G M Bur ¬ ton H P Hcadley Willis Sharpe Kilmer Montfort Jones Samuel Ross R II Ander ¬ son Maj T C McDowell J S McGinnis Gif ford A Cochran G C Moshier J S Cosden Robert L Gerry J T Looney Dodson Mat lack John Shaughnessy H C Fisher and Clay Brothers Some sort of a line is obtainable i on twentyfour of these maidens but there remain the sixteen that were not shown as twoyearolds They have earned their way into a nomination for this big race and must have shown enough to warrant being entered It may be entirely possible to class the star twoyearolds of last year One may reach a conclusion that will make Enchantment better than Zev and Sallys Alley better than either There are those who may undertake to show that General Thatcher on his twoyearold form has every chance to beat a colt like Dunlin Goshawk may have a better figure with the handicapper than Cherry Pie or any of the others Messenger with some handi cappers will stand out almost alone aloneBut But how about The Sage Hintstick Squan ¬ der Wise Guy Hyperion Errand Boy and the others that have not raced Then there is Cyclone the 21000 yearling He has not yet been raced but Bily Garth has never given up hope for him himThese These are some of the maidens that are the unknown quantities in the probable Ken ¬ tucky Derby field fieldAlmost Almost every trainer who has a candidate for the big race will send him to the post j j before the contest on May 19 and it is probable j that one or another of the maidens will take a forward position among the possibilities just as Busy American did last year
