OIL MANS IMPRESSIVE RACE Defeats John Paul Jones Spanish Maize and Other Good Ones She Devil anil Dclhimar Score Double for forJSenny JSenny Creech Just Right Triumphs TriumphsOver Over York Lassie SAN DIEGO Cal March 16 A distance new to Oil Man one of the remnants or Gusher Bill Howes stable was such a good fit for him at Tijuana yesterday after ¬ noon that he took John Paul Jones Spanish Maize and others into camp Oil Man made all the pace had the track to himself ana ran one and onesixteenth miles in 1 J5 Had it been necessary he could have shaded this time quite a bit for there was much daylight between him and John Paul Jones at the finish and then jockey Thompson on Oil Man was easing up his mount mountDespite Despite the fact that the card was some ¬ what ordinary aside from the feature just mentioned a crowd far better than the aver ¬ age Thursday gathering was in attendance The weather continued perfect ana tne course was at its best bestThere There was a little delay at the post and this was caused by Oil Man which had the inner rail position Starter Morrissey got the field away in good alignment and jockey Thompson took Oil Man right to the front He opened up a gap to maintain a safe mar ¬ gin all the way Nearest to him until the turn for home was Dorius with John Paul Jones in closest attendance Spanish Maize had been running far back all the way The bid of John Paul Jones came at the far turn He passed Dorius with ease but Oil Man had such a lead that he was never endan ¬ gered Spanish Maize came with a late rush to hold the show showThe The spangles of Benny Creech were suo cessful in two of the races yesterday His She Devil and Delhimar accounting for the fourth and seventh races She Devil paid better than 15 to 1 and just managed to get the decision over Walter Dant with Colonel Matt in close attendance Delhimar won by a wide margin in his race a gallop of one mile and seventy yards At the finish he held a fivelengths advantage over Herder which was driving to the limit to save the place from Melchoir MelchoirJockey Jockey Martinez audacity in sending Just Right through an opening the size of the proverbial knothole landed Just Right a win ¬ ner by a head from York Lassie in the In ¬ troductory dash of the day At odds of 1 to Just Right looked hopelessly pocketed turning for home However Martinez grasped the opportunity to come through on the inside and saving ground he ultimately downed York Lassie in the final strides stridesA A bumping match engaged in by Allie Ochs and Carlos Enrique enabled Pud to continue qn in the eighth and concluding race of the day to win by the safe margin of two and a half lengths Allie Ochs bore out slightly entering the stretch and hampered Carlos Enrique just when the latter was making his run With these two jostling each other Pud free of interference went on about his busi ¬ ness and scored his lucky win winPresident President James Wood Coffroth has ex ¬ tended an invitation to Mary Pickford to come to Tijuana March 25 to crown the win ¬ ner of the Coffroth Handicap The sweet ¬ heart of America as she is termed in mov ¬ ing picture life is an ardent admirer of the thoroughbred and is a frequent visitor at the races here
