Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 17 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland Arthur Redfcrn who is at Washington is reported as saying that the Benning track is full of holes E E Smathers has made an offer for the threeyearold colt Prince of Endurance by Prince of Monaco Melody which is owned by Durnell Herz The colt is eligible for the American and Kentucky Derbys DerbysOaklands Oaklands track was muddy today and the mudlarks had their inning Barney Schreibers Deutschland was particularly favored by the going and took the overnight handicap from his old rival Princess Titania He appeared sore when going to the post but forced the pace from the start in the stiffest part of the track where his dicky legs did not seem to bother him Princess Titania is not a mud runner but she displayed brilliant early spead in following Deutschland and was a mighty tired horse at the finish Matt Hogan tried to outrun Deutschland right after the start but the Saui colt was in his glory in the mud and was not to be denied Matt Hogan tired after his early effort and was outgamed for third money by Lady Kent Only three horses went to the post for the St Patricks Day Handicap at New Orleans with Sheriff Bell and Floyd K declining the issue Ben Chance admirably ridden by Munro was returned the winner from De Reszke and Marshall Neil Ben Chance was rated behind De Reszke for tha first threequarters caught him at the turn into the homestretch and out gamed him in a driving finish De Reszke showed much early speed but tired in the stiff going and was lucky to outstay Marshall Neil for second place Gannon was off form today and gave Marshall Neil a poor ride He had him under restraint all through the early run ¬ ning and showed poor judgment in keeping him next to the inner rail where the track was a sea of mud When he did give Marshall Neil his head the horse made a wonderful finish and was going fastest of all at the end Jockey Fuller startled the race goers at New Orleans with more sensational riding In the first race he rode Terry McGoverns Cincinnatus to a neck victory over Lachace and eight other moderate platers The second race saw him a victor on Ruby Ray from the stable of Doyh Bros Ruby Ray outclassed the others and led from the rise of the barrier to the finish This filly evidently likes a amuddy muddy track from the way in which she dis ¬ posed of her opponents Fuller had the mount on White Owl in the third race and he kept her on the outside of the track for the first threeeighths and then cut across to the middle of the track where the going was better while all the other riders hugged the inside rail where the going was heavy Fickle Saint took second money in this race after being outrun for the first half of the fiveeighths He came with a rush through the stretch and outgamed Lakota in the last few strides Lakota stepped in a hole just after crossing the finish and fell Florrie S tumbled over her but neither La ¬ kota or Florrie S was injured There was a nine minutes delay at the post for this race because of the fractiousness of The Widow which ran away two miles
