Here and There on the Turf Louisiana Derby Plans for forthe the Future Stake Races at Bowie Next NextMonth Month Benefit of a Liberal Policy PolicyRealized Realized Races like the Louisiana Derby make it worth while to keep good threeyearolds in training and it is gratifying to know that the future plan is to make this race more valuable still next year and to make it an annual feature In this connection it is also a big thing that is being done at Bowie when there will be three stake races of 5000 added value decided during the spring meeting which opens April 2 2For For a long time the Bowie policy was to devote all the money to overnight purses for the reason that horses of that grade furnished the entertainment There have been stake races offered before by the Southern Mary ¬ land Association but never was there a like liberality in that line for its spring meeting meetingThere There were three big stake races offered at the fall meeting last November with the re ¬ sult that Bowie had the most remarkable meet ¬ ing its history There was the Maryland Handi ¬ cap at a mile and a sixteenth with 5000 I added that was won by Lucky Hour the En ¬ durance Stakes a mile ran for twoyearolds worth a like amount that was won by Oui Oui and the Thanksgiving Handicap with 10000 added that was taken by Maximac No better horses were seen all through the racing year than those that finished out their cam ¬ paign at Bowie That was reason enough for the stakes in i the spring Of course there will not be as many good ones ready for spring as there were for fall racing but Bowie has gone far beyond the overnight race program It has taken a ncw and a proud place in the turf Echeme of Maryland and it should be a sure thing that stake races will always be a part of the program of every meeting They will 1 be stakes races that will grow in value and 1 consequently in importance This will make j for better racing and better patronage patronageThese These early valuable races in Manland serve 2 a double purpose They offer excellent op ¬ portunities for profitable training of candi ¬ dates for th3 Kentucky Derby the Preakness Stakes Bdmont Stakes Metropolitan Handi ¬ cap as well as many of the other stake races that arc to follow No matter how skillful the trainer there is nothing to tighten up a horse and make him ready for a supreme effort like an actual race These Maryland races furnish qualifying contests and right there the trainer has an opportunity to ap ¬ proximately gauge his horse At the same time b2 is racing for a reward that makes a best effort well worth while Bowie enjoys a peculiar advantage over the other Maryland mile tracks on account of its proximity to Washington and the old Bennin course of the Washington Jockey Club The equipment of th3 Southern Maryland Associa ¬ tion is all too small to accommodate any ¬ thing like the number of horses that race there year after year but it is possible to stable at Benning and race at Bowie A spe ¬ cial train is run daily between the training ground and the track and no real inconvenience is suffered by being that far away Laurel is just as close or closer to Washington but the Bowie advantage is that both it and the Benning course are on the electric line of the W B A while Laurel is on the Baltimore and Ohio and not as easy of access to Benning As some of the trainers express it Ben ¬ ning is made to order as a training ground for the Bowie horses and several of the train ¬ ers prefer to train there instead of over the ground they race their horses
