Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 19 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland General W H Jackson former master of famous Belle Msade the eldest breeding estab ¬ lishment in the country and too one of the most famous men in the South was taken seriously ill last Monday evening and for a time his life was in danger The best doctors were summoned and General Jackson was resting easier Tuesday His bad health has occasioned alarm amons his friends In a letter to a friend in this country Matt Allen who will train the Kcsnc horses in England this year says that in all probability Conroy will not start in the Lincolnshire Han ¬ dicap The colt recently ran away two mihs throwing Lucicn Lyne and also got a kick which Allen believes will put him out of all chances for the Lincolnshire Up to that time Conroy according to Allen was working finely and looked better then ever before Allen says that last year an Irishbred horse Bachelors Button ran a mile in 1 33V The stewards at the Fair Grounds handed down their decision relative to a protest made by Ed Corrigan against F Gering Jr in the claiming of Stratton Corrigans claim was that Gering was acting for another party in the transaction This however could not be proved and the ruling as handed out by the officials read as follows Upon investigation of the claim of Edward Corrigan as to the good faith of the parties claiming the horse Strat ¬ ton on February 20 we find nothing to justify the protest Jockey Odom left for New York where he goes to sign a contract for second call with Alex Shields He is to receive 6000 for his services and there are some rich promises if he can pilot Advance Guard to victory in some of the big fixtures in which he has been entered After the papers are signed he will go to Memphis where he will ride McChesney in the Montgomery Handicap He has also agreed to pilot Sweet Alice if she is sent there to bid for the Tennessee Oaks He said that if he sees a fair amount of work ahead of him he may stay for the entire meeting at Mont ¬ gomery Park This means that there is very little chance of his being seen at Benning John E Madden who is training his splen ¬ did string of horses at Churchill Downs sev ¬ eral days ago made the interesting statement that he knew of a fouryearold which can beat either Hermis or McChesney doing any ¬ thing from running races to eating oats Hcr mis and McChesney as all turfmen know are generally considered the champions of the East and West respectively and no turfman of any prominence or experience has heretofore dared dispute the claims of their owners and ad ¬ mirers Mr Madden however says that Gun ¬ fire William C Whitneys filly is by lonr odds the greatest race horse in the world Mr L V Bell the owner of Ilermis is a warm personal friend of mine said Mr Madden and I have never seen McChesney and of course cannot criticise him for that reason but I will go on record as saying that I con ¬ sider Gunfire the superior of any living thoroughbred and that must include both Uermis and McChesney
