HUNTINGTON OPENS TODAY * Everything Ready at West Virginia Jockey Club Mile Course. ♦ ■art l.ntliiiNiasm Manifested and Hotels Are Crowded — Rig Field for West Virginia Par by. HUNTINGTON, w. Va.. April 11.— Everything is in readiness for the opening of the spring race meeting of the West Virginia •Jockey Club here Thursday afternoon. All stalls are filled with a good grade of thoroughbreds and there should be no trouble in filling the daily programs. Much enthusiasm is being manifested in the meeting and all hotels report that they are over crowded with race visitors. All cflicials of the meeting have arrived on the ground and nothing remains undone for an auspicious opening. With the arrival of Tender Seth fourteen eligibles for the West Virginia Derby are now quartered at the course. When Glabella, owned by W. D. Bernhardt, arrives from New Orleans tomorrow, all of the Derby candidates will be on the ground, with the exception of Calcutta, which will be shipped from Bouisville by owner Allen a day or so before the race. Kent 1... a Derby candidate, arrived today in charge of T. Bornman. He will carry the colors of Miss M. Kelly of New Orleans, and is counted upon as being a stout contender for honors. It is more than likely that Miss Kelly will be the only woman owner represented in the race, as Slanderer, which was nominated by Mrs. 11. T. Berry, is reported to be on t!ie ailing list. Entries to the Derby and Tri-State Handicap clos. tomorrow at midnight and several additional nominations are expected. | It is likely that twelve three-year-olds will sro to the post in the Derby, while Manager Pecfc expects a field of fourteen sprirrters in the handicap. Horsemen pronounce the local course one of the fastest and safest in the country. The well-known turf correspondent. Frank Ortell. and Karl McQuaide were arrivals today. Mike Mitchell and Des Dresden also arrived from Cincinnati. Jockey Eddie Martin is on hand arrd will ride for- the Troxler and Reiser stables. Jockey R. IfcDermott will arrive Friday to pilot the horses of W. F. Knebelkamp. which are being trained by S. Miodow.
