OLD SOL GETS THERE » His Arrival at Louisville Contributes to Improved Racing. ♦ Brookholt and By Gosh Account for Principal Contest of Afternoon — Crack T. S. Jordan. « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 17.— For the first time during the present meeting the sun made its appearance and it contributed to improved racing and general interest in the sport. An immense throng crowded beautiful Churchill Downs during the afternoon and displayed a keen interest in the proceedings. Two overnight purse races, each of ,600, featured and brought to the post racers of the better grade. The one at seven-eighths enabled the Audley Farm Stable to annex its first purse of the Kentucky season when Brookholt scored, but his success was attended with considerable racing luck, as Washington, the runner-up, might have reversed the decision but for stumbling at a critical period when about to pass Brook-holt. The race also carried an additional incident in the breakdown of Marjorie By nes. The filly suffered a mishap at a vital period during the last eighth, but she appeared beaten at the time. K. K. Bradleys By Gosh accounted for the mile race, which divided interest with the one mentioned above. His success came only in the last stride after a strenuous performance in which he had to zigzag all over the track to secure clear passage. Be finished witli BUtBMM and downed Everhart. which had 1 een the leader from the start, in the last stride. Following the pair closely came Anglum Maid. Brookholt and By Gosh were outstanding favorites. The public fared in spbndid fashion during the afternoon, for choices were successful in most instances. The aoeaaal race brought to the post a good band of juveniles and introduced the crack 1. S. Jordan, from. Herbert P. Gardners stable. He raced like a veteran and displayed a high order of speed from the I start, ultimately heating home Chilhowee, with Rob Cahill only a head in back of the Callahcr racer and overhauling him fast. Chilhowee again showed swerving out tendencies when it came to the pinch. The introductory dash was a sprited duel between Guest of Honor, the favorite, and Kinscle~e. The latter displayed a high order of speed for five-eighths, but thereafter Guest of llumr sained on him steadily and gradually forged to the front and won by half a length. The third race furnished a surprise when II. 10. Clark, carrying J. S. Hawkins colors. won easily from Romping Mary after leading for the entire way. Rustem finished in third place. There was considerable support here for Punta Gcrda, but that erratic racer was always far back and never figured seriously. The two-year-old dash for platers resulted in victory for Quotation, which had to be hard ridden to wear down Verbena, which left the barrier like a shot and showed the way until the last sixteenth. Easter Bonnet, after going prominently to the last eighth, began tiring badly. Furor caused a bad start by bolting and interfering with several of the others. The first of the special trains from Chicago unloaded its Derby freight this morning, and an imposing crowd it made. From now on there will be steady arrivals from the Windy City. »
