WEATHER IMPROVED Factor in Bringing Out Increased Attendance at Latonia. Audacious a Dismal Disappointment Lady Astors Long Odds Golden Billows Lucky. - LATONIA, -Ky.p Nov. 1. Crisp and clear weather was again the rule here and it served to bring out the full strength of the racing regulars augmented by the advance guard of visitors here to witness Saturdays momentous race that will decide the three-year-old championship. Track conditions were still a bit severe, but it continued to improve under the influence of sun and wind. The big track force with implements also assisted materially to bring it into more normal condition and if no more moisture visits these parts the course will be perfect for the big Saturday fixture. In view of the track conditions todays mcing card was a good one and several of the contests were enlivened by close finishes after gruelling drives through the stretch. The outstanding dash was a mile purse, in which Audacious was a pronounced choice and a dismal disappointment, the race coins to Lady Astor in the last strides after a stubborn effort to wear down Lord Granite. The latter finished several lengths before Jimmie Daw. Audacious showed good speed until reaching the stretch turn, where he suddenly gave way and tired badly during the sprint to the finish. Heremon, another highly regarded one, was given a poor ride and he also ran as if disliking the stiff going. Lady Astors mile in 1:40 was particularly good over the track. Some highlythought of youngsters tried conclusions in the three-quarters handicap and it resulted in a victory for Battle Creek by a small margin over Colonel Gilmore, with Chilhowee in third place. nOY UNFORTUNATE. Another close finish came with the running of the sixth in which some good platers met. Golden Billows scored a lucky victory over Hoy. with Halu in third place. Hoy would have won but for Halu swerving in fiont of him at a critical period in the stretch, when Hoy was going fast It forced him to take up and go around and though he finished with great speed Golden Billows succeeded in keeping his head in front when the race ended. Colored Boy furnished an upset in the third, which he won, but his backers put in an anxious period as a result of Mooneys action of casing him before the finish and failing to note the rush of Ferguson. Colored Boy won easily, but it was only by a scant head. The stewards promptly took Mooney to task for his action of easing Colored Boy before the finish of the race. Minus, carrying J. B. Rcspcss colors, got home in advance of Annie Lyle and Lady Burrows. Poppye began the days proceedings by winning easily from "Winding Through and Jou Jou. W. K. Rowe claimed Prince K. out of the last race at a cost of ,500. Because of post time for the first race having been moved up to 1:15, scratch time for that day has been moved forward to 8 a. m. LEAVE FOR THE DOWNS. Three carloads of horses departed today for Churchill Downs. The shipment included the stable of Williams Brothers and portions of the establishments of the Audley Farm stable and Harncd Brothers and Jones. W. H. Hall will ship eleven horses to Louisville Sunday morning. Lou Calin will send four head along in the same car. Trainer Cecil Howard has arranged to ship the S. N. Holman stable comprising a dozen horses to New Orleans next Tuesday. Jockey J. Pcvic will accompany the shipment. Jockey Earl Pool injured one of his hands this morning and was forced to cancel his riding engagements for this afternoon. The advance guard of newspaper correspondents, delegated to report the running of the Latonia Championship race, got in this morning when French Lane of the Chicago Tribune and Andrew Griffin of the Chicago Herald-Examiner put in an appearance.
