HAVANA, Cuba. Dec. 31. There was an afternoon of sparkling racing for the second Monday that the sport has been conducted at Oriental Park this meeting. All the race3 were well contested, particularly so in the third and fourth. Jockey A. Pickens figured prominently in the decision of both of these races. It was due to his vigorous riding that Radical accounted for the third. He slipped through on the inside while rounding" the far turn and, taking the lead, held to the. end. His mount tired slightly near the end. but Pickens kept him going long enough to outlast the fast finishing Weinland. In the fourth, a race for Cuban breds, Pickens again showed to good advantage. He had the mount on Cuba Encanto and, taking the Solomon gelding to the front with the rise of the barrier, managed to maintain a slight lead to the end, riding hard in the last eighth to withstand the challenge of Guajiro. The latter threatened seriously in a game and fast closing rush that almost brought victory, Tyo outsiders inTGTcpo air -Boilansky Jin-ished first and second respectively in the opening dash of the afternoon. The favorite Miriam Cooper was third. "When the barrier was released McLaughlin sent Hope to tho front and the three-year-old made every post a winning one, being eased up at the finish without ever being in danger. Bodanzky closed a big gap from a slow beginning and, finishing fast, outgamed Miriam Cooper for second honors. Had the latter not run out on the stretch turn there might have been a chance for her of making it interesting for the winner. In his last appearance under colors P. T. Barnum attempted to lead ali the way and failed right at the end. Today he was more successful, though he had little to spare at the finish. He was an odds-on choice and, the lead with a rush, set a speedy taking pace for his opponents to follow. All looked well entering the stretch, bu" in the last eighth he tired suddenly and rapidly, just barely lasting to earn a neck decision, under Brothers vigorous finish. Humorist was closely pressing the winner in the final strides and just failed to get up. William Irvine is weeding out the stablo he brought here for Edward F. Whitney. Yesterday he disposed of the two-year-old Trafalgar to W. A. McKinney and the fivo-i, year-old mare By Jiminy to T. M. McBrid. John McFarlan of the Pinkerton forces was an arrival from Chicago yesterday and will assist in policing the Oriental Park course for the remainder of the winter. P. Phelps, who sent three yearlings from Kentucky to Cuba, was an arrival from Louisville. Jockey Majestic was suspended for ten. days.
