Sis Melbourne Cup Victory Will G Enlarge Sires Stud Opportunity. October, Which Sired Australian Crack, Was G Amcriean-llreil His Most Illustrious Son Shows Great Staying Qualities. The following article about Bitalli, the Melbourne Cup winner, and his American- S: bred sire, October, is from the pen of "Cardi- r: n gan" of the Sydney Referee: K The Randwick trainer J. Burton bred the b Melbourne Cup winner, Bitalli, but unfortu- p nately for that trainer, he sold him several t to months ago. Previous to Bitallts sale he b be also sold October, his sire, to Arthony t to Hordern and his dam. Miss Phillina, to D. U. Seaton. a October, however, was passed on some few months ago to the Hoysted Brothers at Wan- a garatta, where he is now standing at a rea- a as sonable fee. and Bitallis dam was presented T Mr. Seaton to his son George, who early I his career as a breeder has the distinc- t tion of owning the dam of a Melbourne Cup winner. However, from what Mr. Seaton n told me in Melbourne, his son is not going n follow in his footsteps as a breeder and is r taking up a more lucrative profession the law. IMPORTED BY FRANCIS FOY. s I remember seeing October a few days E after he landed in Australia and thought what a nice horse he was. He was imported Francis Foy and after his period of quar- 0 antine was at Burtons stables and it was i c there that I saw him in company with My Poppo, which is now standing at Dave Liv- i ingstones station. . vt Most-peorl Vi-i.ed -jvtv: Pr.nrc- hes; ncw tober, with his great lerigtli arid good "bone, , impressed me and I thought he was sure to ; do well at the stud, even if he failed on the s race course. He would not stand a prepara- tion and was sent to the stud. He was not : great success in his early seasons, although i in Wirraway he got a horse out of the ordi- i nary and a good performer. However, Bitalli is easily his biggest win- - j ner to date, and as October is not an old 1 ; horse the chances are he will now get the 5 opportunity he deserves. He is a well-bred 1 horse, being by Rock Sand sire of Tracery, ; the sire of Papyrus from Octoroon, by Hastings - a successful sire in America from 1 Orctgal, by Bend Or from Lizzie Agnes, and 1 traces back to the wonderful Agnes family, from which so many good winners and successful stallions have descended. RUENALF VAS HOT FAYORITE. Miss Phillina is by Ruenalf which was a hot favorite for the Melbourne Cup himself, but failed from Parapet, by Lochiel from Paraphrase, by Chester from Phillina imp., by Bonnyfield. It will be seen that Bitallis pedigree is a blending of some of the most successful lines in England, America and Australia, and with horses like St. Simon, Bend Or. Yattendon and Chester in the fourth remove of his pedigree it is little wonder that he stays so very well. Bitalli is not a beauty to look at, but he has undoubtedly improved since being in Scobies stable, having built up considerably, and is now not quite as angular as when at Randwick. He is still, however, high and camel-like in the wither, and his neck is not altogether massive, but he looks bright andj has thickened behind and appears to gallop with a great deal more freedom. His Cup weight was a feather to him and, as he is such a good stayer, it looks as if, he will have a good chance of winning more big races, as he will still be favorably handi-. capped for a horse that can run a distance, There are so few of them nowadays that a good stayer can carry a big weight and win.
