i END AT JEFFERSON d Attendance Large for Final Day I of Winter Meeting. Oc Roseate II. Makes It a Double for the J. L. Holland Stable in Defeating Thimble. M , br , NEW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 31. Racing- at ss Jefferson Park terminated this afternoon and M will be resumed March 5. the day following n the close of the Fair Grounds meeting. It m will then hold sway until March 17, when the h had Louisiana Derby, with an added value of H 515.000, will be run. g Getaway incidents in connection with the closing were of the usual style. The attend- m ancc was particularly generous, one of the best crowds of the meeting being on hand to g bid temporarily good bye to the sport at the b, by Shrewsbury course. Among those present in were many new arrivals from different parts t. of the country, whose object is to be in at- tendance during the entire progress of the t meeting at the Fair Grounds, where racing t to inaugurates tomorrow and continues for the next fifty-five days. j Intermittent showers that fell during the afternoon did not materially affect the sport. The track was in the best condition that it lias been during the entire meeting. a The Jefferson Park management expressed v satisfaction with the result of the meeting b by just come to a close. Financially it was a far from successful. The inclement weather t that has prevailed for most of the time since r the opening, coupled with the bad condition qf the track, detracted considerably from all I epaftn.cnts of the racing. Cc-nsUiexIhg tt, t adverse conditions the racing has been up to ., standard. $ GETAWAY FEATURES. r The getaway card was featured by a mile a a pursa race and a handicap at three-quarters. . Both were productive of spirited contests. r Roseate II., carrying the J. L. Holland colors, won in the stellar attraction in clever r syle from the suddenly improved Thimble, j Incidentally Roseate II.s victory enabled the Holland stable to make it a double for the j afternoon, Daydue having previously landed t a purse for the stable. i The consistent Centimeter earned a purse for the T. H. Bernhardt stable when he t led home a fairly good band of sprinters that i took part in the three-quarter claiming han- , dicap. Hidden Jewel finished in second place and Orcus got up in the last stride to down Muskallonge for third money. The early running was dominated by Centimeter and Hidden Jewel. The pair raced for a while like a team, but Centimeter, benefited by the snug ride given him, saved much ground and drow out from Hidden Jewel just before reaching the stretch and continued to gain in the last eighth to win by a comfortable margin. Hidden Jewel was the favored one. After many efforts Everglade managed to emerge from the maiden ranks when she led home Brilliant Cast and others in the opening contest. Everglade was ridden by E. IMartin and that rider got the colt away from i the barrier in a forward position and, disposing of Little Alfred, the leader, in the s first quarter, had enoush in reserve to stall 1 off the stout challenge of Brilliant Cast. Antiquity, an outsider, finished in third place. . There was much activity in the race about L Leonard G. hut he was far in the wake of E the others for the entire way. daydue ix Titiuairn. Daydne, carrying the colors of J. L. Holland, was returned winner in the third, in i which some fairly good platers met. Peter r Piper and Rhinegold were most fancied in i the race, but Peter Piper, after showing a good amount of speed for half a mile, weakened badly thereafter and finished far back. Rhinegold, after racing forwardly and at one time appearing as if able to overhaul Daydue during the stretch run, tired suddenly and fell a victim to Far Easts rush near the end to lose second place. Jockey Parke, who has shown exceptionally good riding form during the present meeting, and who now heads the list of riders this year, swelled his average by landing three of the afternoons winners. Two of his winning mounts. Centimeter and Baladin, came from the T. H. Bernhardt stable. This local owner has fared well during the present meeting. Centimeters victory was a well-earned one, for he had to do his best to outstay Hidden Jewel. He did it gamely and was well under restraint at the finish. Baladin earned his purse more handily than his stablcmate and was an outstanding favoritie in the closing dash. Parkes other successful mount was East Indian. The change from Accardy to Parke worked .an improvement in the horses running, for he stood a hard drive gamely to wear down Simplicitiy, with Paul Micou in third place. Jockey Lee, who has also been showing good riding form during the meeting, landed a pair of winners, being astride the pair that carries the J. L. Holland colors. The veteran Eddie Martin landed the other winner. The meeting just terminated brought to the fore a promising racing official in Paul J. Miles, who officiated with Joseph. A. Murphy and Jack B. Campbell in the stewardsVtand.. Horsemen praised Paul-Miles work highly and he displayed an ability . that was riot expected of him.
