Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 4, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Oakland and Los Angeles. "Bub" May, who handles the sensational colt Highball, one of the best if not the top-notch two-year-old colt of last season in the East, arrived at New Orleans. Mays mission is to get a contract for first or second call on the services of jockey Fuller for next year. He was commissioned to do this by W. M. Scheftel, by whom he is employed and who is the owner of Highball. Reports have it that John W. Schorr is not so anxious to sell the lot of horses that he sent to New Orleans at the beginning of the meeting and which at that time he regarded as the culls from his big Memphis establishment. Mr. Schorr was present at the opening of the meeting and until the good showing made by Dutiful he thought so little of his New Orleans string that he wanted to dispose of all of them, an even dozen head. Since that time Monte-bank, another member of the Schorr establishment that proved a disappointment last summer, has shown winning form.
