This continued until the stretch was reached, where Romany began gaining in earnest, but just when he seemed a certain winner he tired a trifle, and The Roll Call just managed to keep level with him until in the last stride, where Romany succeeded in getting his nose in front Tony Beau was in third place several lengths away. The racing was inaugurated with a three-eighths dash for fillies and it produced another close windup, E. C. Walkers Mary Dear, a black filly by Moss Fox Dispatch, just managing to win by a matter of inches from Bit o Honey and Mabel C. It was E. Martins alertness at the barrier over Pool on Bit o Honey and Carroll on Mabel C, that won the race. Had Pool gotten Bit o Honey away in better fashion she would have won. The same applies to Mabel C., which raced as if by far the-best of those that took part in the race. Stargo furnished an upset in the second race when he got up to win after a hard drive from Lady Choco and Vultilla.. The three placed ones were outsiders. Zanzibar was best in the race, but suffered much from interference and just failed to get up for third place. The closing race brought about a fall that for a while threatened to result seriously for jockeys Robinson and Thorndyke, respectively astride Superlative and Valentia. The latter was favorite in the race, but went down immediately after the start and Superlative was unable to avoid her. Both riders were shaken up considerably, but otherwise uninjured. Nuyaka, little regarded, was the winner after leading for the entire way, with La Orb just managing to get up in the last stride to beat out War Idol for second place. Deadlock was excused from starting in the fifth race on account of being sore. Forty-live layers were again in line and profited considerably by the failure of a majority of the favorites. Howard Oots has sold to W. C. Bethel the three-year-old Wise Cracker.
