CHERRY PIE THE JUMPER Holder of American Mile Record To Be a Steeplechaser. Canaque Another Plat Racer to Carry the Greentrcc Stable Silks Through the Field This Year. NEW YORK. N. Y., Jan. 17. Cherry Pie, the son of Chicle and Cherry Malotte, which established a new American mile record of 1 :35 at Belmont Park in 1923, will be put to steeplechasing this year. The son of Chicle and Cherry Malotte is now a four-year-cld, and Vincent rowers has high hopes for him as a jumper. With his great burst of speed he will be well able to hold his own on the fiat, and when it is remembered that his dam. Cherry Malotte, was a rarely good mare through the field there is every reason for his making a success in his new line cf endeavor. Cherry Malotte was a rare favorite with Mrs. Payne Whitney, and for that reason she was always particularly fond of Cherry Pie. He has taken kindly to his schooling exercises and at this time he is a good prospect in the powerful stable. In 1922 the Greentree Stable topped the list of all the steeplechase stables and Powers will bring a powerful string out this year in the hope of duplicating that success. Canaque is another that has been converted to a jumper, and he has shown a brilliance in his schooling that augurs well for his racing. Altogether, Vincent Powers has thirteen in his care at Belmont Park, and from these he is sure to develop a strong string. These include South Tip, the subscription jumper, and William W. II., another imported fencer which was purchased from William Read. Jockeys Barrett ITaynes and W. Bethel arc under contract to ride for the stable again, and it is probable that Vincent Powers himself will be seen in the saddle on occasions.
