Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 22, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. The noted brood mare Manola Mason, dam of McChesney, owned by O. D. Randolph of Lexington, dropped a bay filly last Tuesday by Lamplighter. Although Irsdeus was the winner of the handicap at Oakland, the colt was far from best in the race, getting away running at the start and stealing a long and winning lead before the others had even left the barrier. Futurita, with an even break, would have b?en the winner, as she was put to a long and hard stretch drive to save second place from OHagen, these two in their struggle cutting the winners lead down, rapidly, and had the distance been over the mile route they would have overhauled him easily. San Nicholas was also a contender, finishing a head behind OHagen. The distance was six and a half furlongs. The old sprinter Albula also started, but was off form and finished far in the ruck.
