" I Winnings of Two Kentuckians : i J. S. WARD. There will be more than ordinary interest manifested in the stable of J. S. Ward, the Kentucky turfman, during the 1924 campaign. Much of this interest will be centered In Wise Counsellor, which with Sarazen and St. James will in all probability rule favorite for the Kentucky Berby. Wise Counsellor was indeed a fortunate purchase on the part of Mr. Ward and the two victories scored by that slashing colt in the Ward colors went a long way in recompensing him for the outlay :oi 6,000, the price paid for the colt. Worthmore was another purchase of Mr. Ward that should pay his way this year. Here is what the Ward stable did in last years racing: j Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Pedigree. 1st. 2d. 3d. Won. J. E. MADDEN. One of the largest and most successful breeders of thoroughbred horses in this country is John E. Madden, master of Hamburg Place. Unlike most of our breeders, Mr. Madden does not dispose of all his young stock as yearlings, but retains most of them for sale later as two-year-olds. Each year he ships a big band of juveniles down East and before the racing season is far advanced generally has parted with the majority of them. Until he does sell them, however, he keeps them in active training and they are often seen under his colors. Last year his establishment was a large one and twenty-five of the thirty-seven won at least one race for him and all but four brought some monetary return. Here is the record of the Madden stable of 1923: Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Tedigree 1st. 2d. 3d. Won. Rest Love 1. f. 3 Ry Ogden Maud R.
