Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 19, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hot Springs. At Oakland, Veterano made a procession out of the Thornton Stakes of ,500 added, at four miles, by winning with as big a margin as his jockey chose. Sailor Knot was started in an unfit condition and at the end of three miles was totally exhausted. It was an out- rage to have sent him to the post. El Rio Shannon was trailing Veterano and Sailor Knot half a mile in the rear for the first three miles and then overhauled Sailor Knot to take second place. The race was a joke. Today marked the last day of racing for New Orleans until next fall. As a feature for getaway day the New Louisiana Handicap, at one mile and a quarter, was carded and it attracted six starters. TV. Walkers Mauser was the winner over Mrs. M. Goldblatts Rain-land by the narrow margin of a head after an interesting race, in which Rainland and Mauser fought it out from the rise of the barrier to the finish. Gravina was a close-up third, half a length behind Rainland and, closing fast on the leaders, destroyed her chances by running out near the end. In the course of the six days racing conducted by the New Louisiana Jockey Club, the sum of 1,581 was distributed among winning owners, a daily average of ,597. A feminine owner tops the winning list of owners, probably an occurrence without precedence in this country. Mrs. TV. O. Joplin is the fortunate lady, having a total of ,340 to her credit. Circus Girl came out at the head of the list of winning horses, vvith Mauser a good second, their totals being ,275 and ,020 respectively.
