April 7.— W. M. Ryan, whose home is in California and who is well known for having trained Aviscot, I Kings Champion, Robert Gray and other, winning racers, dbd here yesterday after a brief illness since his arrival from New Orleans. He came here a sufferer of cancer of the stomach in its most malignant form and was unaware of his condition until removed to a local hospital. On advices of his rela-1 tives in California, his remains will be buried in a local cemetery. Charles O. Smith, who has been ill for some time, is recovering rapidly and will shortly leave for Columbus, Ohio, to give detail attention to the opening of the track] there that he is extensively interested in. He has been advised that several prominent stables will have representation at the coming meeting under his auspices. Jockey George Carroll has been advised to report at once to the Idle Hour Farm by manager Barry Shannon. Carroll, accompanied by his wife, departed from here yesterday, intending to motor to Bexington. Trainer William Hurley, in charge of the K. R. Bradley stable, now at the New Or-j leans Fair Grounds, lias sent word here that he will ship the string from the Crescent City to Lexington Wednesday next. Big and Burly, that went amiss during the winter, is said to be coming around steadily and some hope is entertained that he will again be able to race. Johnny Dundee, the champion boxer, who at various periods was interested in a racing stable, departed yesterday for New York. He stated that he is again eager to join the ranks of owners and will try to secure several good horses to carry his colors. Joe Levins, well-known eastern operator, departs for New YorK tomorrow via Chicago, where he will stay over for several days. Jack Calvin is another who will depart Continued on twelfth page. Mr. Fellawes other horses are In charge of trainer Johnny Schorr and will be raced in Maryland this spring. Roger Sullivan, auditor of the Kentucky Jockey Club, has been here for some time and shortly contemplates returning to Louisville. He has been vastly benefited by his stay here. Word has been received that jockey Albert Johnson has joined the ranks of benedicts. He married a young miss residing in r.rook-lyn. N. Y. She is a niece of Mrs. GeorgS Carroll. Dave J. T.eary is continuing hi* favorable progress at Health Recovery and will soon be back in his old-time health. He will then join trainer Sam C. Hildreth in Maryland. Bob Nelson, well-known operator on eastern tracks, will shortly leave for New York where he will await the racing season there. Kay Spence will delay departure for another week. The horses he has under his care and owned by the Jones Bros., racing under the nom de course of the Audley Farm Stable, are training in good style at Churchill Downs. Several will be sent to the Lexington track for the racing there. Jefferson Livingston was among the arrivals this morning. He contemplates a stay of two weeks or longer. He will confer with trainer A. L. Kirby relative to racing plans for the summer. Mr. Kirby leaves for Churchill Downs, where the 1 Jving-don-owned horses are now stabled, next Saturday. There has been considerable wagering done by partisans of Sarazen and Wise Counsellor here. The easterners to a man favor Sara-zen and the westerners have supported Wise Counsellor. It has ben on a basis of horse against horse, both to start. Sarazen is slightly favored in the antipost bookmaking down here. Wise Counsellor is held at 8 to 1 and Black Gold has receded to 20 to 1.
