Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events cf June 14, 1904 Racing at Gravcsend, Harlem, Buffalo, Fair Grounds and Unicn Park at St. Louis. Hermis defeated a fine band in the Brook-dale Handicap at Graves-end today when he ran the mile and an eighth in the good time of 1 :52% to be home in front of Dainty and Major Daingerfield by a length and a half. Eugenia Burch and Brooklynite also ran. "Nothing but rain will beat that fellow out of first money in the American Darby," remarked a well advised turfman as English Lad cantered home in front of his field in the Derby Trial at Harlem this afternoon. English Lad won as his rider pl.ased, moving up to second place after the half mile post had been passed and, taking command as they turned into the homestretch, won under re ptniat, The prospective Suburban field has dwindled away to six probable starters. Shorthose is carded, but it is deemed so sure that he will net go to the post that no price is laid against him in the betting overnight. Irish Lad is a strong favorite in the overnight betting, but if it rains prior to the race quotations against Major Daingerfield, Proper and Africander will change radically. The list of probable starters is: Irish Lad, HermLs, The Picket, Proper, Africander and Major Daingerfield. What, after a careful canvass among the owners and trainers, seems to be a certain field for the American Derby, to be run Saturday, is as fdovvs: English Lad, Moharib, Elwood, Proceeds, Fort Hunter, Highball, Rapid Water, Bill Curtis and Flower King. Rainland will go if the track is muddy and C. Gray will have the mount. Ho Bobs race yesterday was disappointing to Tichenor and Co., but they may determine to couple him with Flower King. Woodson, Proof Reader, Brand New, Ed Tierney, Felipe Lugo, Mayor David S. Ross and Remorseful are yet in the doubtful list. Delmcnico pulled up lame after a mile and a half workout the other day and will not be a starter.
