Jockey Henry, who rode Sam Hildreths Watfull in the Worlds Fair Handicap, said: "My mount ran an excellent race under the circumstances. She cant run anywhere near her best form if the footing breaks under her. Had the track been sloppy or heavy she would have been much closer up and probably given the winner a stout argument." Bad News, never better than 2 to 5 and 1 to 3 at post time, won the mile race at Hawthorne today easing up. It was his eighth victory out of eleven starts this season. In the other three he finished second. At the close of the meeting here E. R. Bradley will take him along with the balance of his string to the eastern tracks. The Canadian Derby was the big attraction on the opening day of the Fort Erie meeting. N. Dyment furnished the winner in his good colt Fort Hunter, which was much the best and came home by himself in a canter. V. Hendries Scarfell was second and much the best of the others. The real contest was for third place, R. G. Dennys Early Boy outstaying M. J. Dalys Judge by a nose. The distance was one and a quarter mile3 and the race was worth ,180 to the winner. R. T. Wilson added Dolly Spanker to the Equality Stakes at post time today at Sheeps-head Bay and the gelding won by a noss from St. Valentine in a driving finish, while two and a half lengths away was James R. Keenes Toboggan, which beat Roehampton the same distance for the short end of the money. Grey Friar, Savable and Meltonian were the other starters for the ,000 added money. Dolly Spanker, under Hildebrands brilliant horsemanship, showed astonishing improvement and after being reserved in close attendance on a phenomenally fast pace for six furlongs took up the running on the last turn and, after stealing a long lead, just got home in a driving finish. Ths distance was one mile and the net value ,780.
