BIG CHICAGO CROWD Journey to Aurora for Defense Day Program of Racing. Main Race to Halekala Easily Mark Denunzio and Jockey C. Gross Winning Combination. AURORA, 111., Sept. 12. Ideal racing weather greeted the vast throng that journeyed to the races today to participate in the sport. The three special trains that came from Chicago were crowded, many soldiers in uniform were in attendance and quite a number of the fair sex took advantaga of the managements hospitality and attended as their guests. Forty-two books were on and much enthusiasm was shown in the speculation. The track dried out fast and was good by race time. The fourth race, the Defense Day purse, at one mile and seventy yards, which was the best race of the card and it was won by Haleakala in easy fashion. Belle Amie, carrying the silks of A. Rold, was sscond, with G. B. Diggs Chaplet taking the short end of the purse. Off in good order, Jones sent Archie Alexander into the lead, with Haleakala forcing the pace and Belle Amie leading the remainder of the field, which was strung out to some extent. They ran this way to the half, where Archie Alexander started to shorten his stride. It was at this point that Smith sent Haleakala into a long lead which he never relinquished, Archie Alexander dropping back to second and Belle Amie still retaining third position. In the s.tretch Archie Alexander dropped out of contention, while Belle Amie and Chaplet moved up to second and third- places. The finish saw Haleakala an easy winner, with Belle Amie three lengths in front of Chaplet, which was five lengths in front of Archie Alexander, Richelieu and Mart OHara, the other two starters, finishing in the order named. boo boo noaiE first. The opening race, a five-eighth dash for maiden two-year-old fillies, was won by the heavily supported favorite Boo Boo with June Day second and Bay Dingle third. After six minutes delay at the post they were off in good order. Helen G. was the first to show out of the bunch with Intake and June Day in closest pursuit. Boo Boo the favorite was leading the others that were pretty well bunched and they ran this way to the turn into the stretch where Intake went to the lead with Helen G. dropping back -to second and Boo Boo moving up to third. Bay Dingle which had been trailing had worked her way up on the outside to a contending position. The finish saw Boo Boo an easy winer under a good ride by Smith with June Day second by half length over the fast coming Bay Dingle. Test of Time . ran a much better race than the chart shows. The five-eighths sprint fell to the favorite Mark Denunzio with the veteran C. Gross, who is riding in phenominal form, in the saddle. Adventure was second and W. Phillips Sir Lawnfal was third. Off in good order Gross lost no time sending Mark Denunzio in the lead and rating him in front won by half a length. Adventure, which had forced the pace all the way, was second with the well supported long shot Sir Lawnfal taking the short end of the purse. It was strictly a three-horse race from the rise of the barrier. rOPPTE BEATS WHALEBONE. The third on the program, a claiming dash, at three-quarters, was won by E. He-nius Poppye with "Whalebone second and favorite Eddie Jr., third. Whalebone was the one to cut out the lead in this race with Poppye and Eddie Jr. forcing the pace. They ran in order named to well into the stretch where Whalebone weakened. Zucchini, who was holding Poppye in restraint, roused his mount and came on to win handily at the ; finish. Whalebone taking second place from Eddie Jr. by three and a half lengths. T. E. Crist supplied the winner for the 3 fifth event, a five and a half furlong dash, when his filly Remnant scored in easy fashion from seven other platers. Uncle Abe 2 was second with Keaolani third. After a 1 brief delay at the barrier they were off in 1 good alignment Scamper was the first to 3 show with Shining Gold second and Keaolani i leading the others. In the run through the stretch Remnant kept increasing her lead and Uncle Abe, Keao-loni and Scamper had a battle royal for second place. A blanket would have covered all three of them. Remnant was an easy winner- with Uncle Abe second a nose in front of Keaolani, which beat Scamper by a nose for the short end of the purse. The sixth race proved to be a runaway for Leslie, from the stable of A. B. Stelle, which made a show of his company, winning by ten lengths pulled up. Molinero was second, with Courtship third. Away -in good order, Smith lost no time sending Leslie to the front and he opened up a five-length lead and kept increasing it until it was apparent that he would be an easy winner. Bob Prater was the one to follow the flying leader to the stretch, where he dropped back to third. Molerino, which had been running third, moved up to second position. Courtship, away none too well, closed an immense gap and finished third. Jockey Murphy was set down by the judges for ten days in this race for cutting across in front of the others at the start and endangering the chances of. horses on the inside.
