ACTIVITY AT NEW ORLEANS Busy Scenes at Jefferson Park and the Fair Grounds ricnty of Riding Material for Both Meetings Ready for the Opening Thursday. NEW ORLEANS. La.. Nov. 22. With the close approach of the winter racing season, which is scheduled to open here at Jefferson Park next Thursday, there is much activity at both the local courses, where horses are arriving daily. Jefferson Park, under new ownership, which includes A. F. Thompson, president ; R. S. Eddy, Jr., general manager, Jas. L. Lemarie, secretary and treasurer, and J. B. Campbell, racing secretary, is spic and span and everything is ready for what is expected to be one of the best meetings in the history of the Shrewsbury course. There will be no scarcity of riding material for the forthcoming meeting at Jefferson Parle Already there is close to twenty good boys on the scene and it is expected that when the Kentucky delegation reaches here Tuesday, horsemen will be in a position to select capable riders with comfort. Among the jockeys now here and galloping horses daily are: C. Gross, J. Merimee, J. Thomas, G. Cooper, R. Holloway, R. Moser, J. D. Mooney, J. H. Burke, J. Dawson, J. Kelly, V. Swanson, R. McCrann, N. J. Barnes, C. Robinson and C. Allen. According to word received from Lexington almost every rider of note plans to ride hero during the winter season. The list of riders, however, will be minus the name of Ivan Parke, a big favorite here, until about December 10, that jockey having decided to visit his parents at Delco, Idaho, prior to reporting to Mose Goldblatt, who will have first call on his services. Parke, through his phenomenal showing here from January 1 until the close of tho local season on March 17, practically clinched riding honors for the season of 1924. In the workouts at the Fair Grounds Friday, there were a number of smart moves. One of the best trials was that of Wild Aster, which negotiated a half-mile in :53 and accomplished the task in a manner to indicate that he has his speed. The extensive Greentree Stable, owned by Mrs. Payne Whitney and trained by Clyde Phillips, is progressing nicely in the preparation- of its racers. Among the old-time favorites with New Orleans that were given an airing during the workout hours were Rinkey and Dazzler, both of which performed up to the expectations of trainer Phillips. Word was received by manager Eddy of the Jefferson Park course that J. B. Campbell, who will fill the office of racing secretary, departs from Bowie, Md., Saturday night and will report Monday. As in previous years, there will be a meeting of the stewards, probably Tuesday, to pass upon applications oi trainers and jockeys for privileges during the meeting, which extends through December 31, before the scene shifts over to the Fair Grounds.
