VICTORY FOR SUMPTER Adds to His Laurels at Bowie in Winning La Fayette Purse. Jockey McAtee and Lady Audrey a Successful Combination Goodly Crowd Present. BOWIE. Md., Nov. 26. Robert Odoms Sumpter added to his laurels when he was an easy -winner of the La Fayette Purse, which was offered as the feature attraction at Bowie this afternoon. The son of Landj Mole Isircse, beat several of the best juve- niles stabled at the Prince Georges county i track, including R. T. Wilsons Senalado and Gifford A. Cochrans Dangerous, which finished second and third, respectively. Six others finished in the ruck. Sumpter was ridden by jockey Coltilettl, and raced back to his previous good start, in which he also proved successful by aj much wider margin. In todays dash he i kept close to the pace for the first eighth, I and when settled in his stride displaced I Cloudland, and from then on never left the ultimate result in serious doubt. Cloudland, J I Panic and Dandy were the ones to force the j pace the first part, while Dangerous was I j bringing up the rear. Bounding the far turn j I there was a general closing up, and Bruns j 1 slipped through on the inside and for a brief, moment loomed up as a dangerous factor. By j Hisself, the son of Man o War, which has! to his credit several stakes, seemed to be l unable to run well in the Bowie going and did not cut any serious factor in the race. Swinging for home Sumpter increased his advantage and at the end was under steady restraint. Senalado was driving hard to stall off the fast finishing Dangerous, which came fast on the outside and finished with a rush. Cloudland tired from his early efforts, and at the end gave way. FROM UNEXPECTED QUARTERS. There was a crowd of good proportions on hand to witness the days card, and racing was of a spirited nature. The majority of the winners came from an unexpected quarter and netted large dividends. J. F. Richardsons Hoot Mon, ridden by jockey E. Barnes, was winner of the first race of the afternoon at seven-eighths, in a hard drive from B. Moores Transformer, while Roller was third. The winner forced the pace from the start, and came around Transformer in the stretch, and, under severe pressure, got up in the closing strides. Transformer quickly drew into a brief lead, and it was only through the final eighth that he tired. Roller raced well from the start, and was a good third. Hoot Mon was accorded but meagre support. P. Gordons Flag On, ridden by jockey ODonnell, graduated from the maiden ranks in the running of the second race over the seven-eighths course, when he showed the way to ten others with ease. Sun Los raced to second place, while Gold Trap was third. Flag On was a neglected factor, and during the early running was badly outrun, but rounding the far turn improved his position. When straightened out in the stretch ODonnell sent him through an opening and in a few strides he disposed of the leaders, and at the end was under restraint. Sun Los, after showing the way up to the sixteenth post, tired badly and was ridden out to the limit to stall off Gold Trap. The latter came with a belated rush on the outside. Clean, which had been racing forwardly from the start, was badly bumped and knocked off his stride. In some unaccountable way the blinkers with which he paraded to the post became unfasten d and fell off. LESTER DOCTOR UNRULY. Jockey L. McAtee and W. V. Dwyers Lady Audrey proved a winning combination in the third race at six and one-half furlongs, when she was an easy winner from Mrs. C. C. Halls Freedoms Call, while Mrs A. Swenkes Lester Doctor was third. McAtee had Lady Audrey away well, but quickly took her under steady restraint until the far turn was reached, Avhere he went to the front with a rush, to win well under restraint. Freedoms Call was up in the final strides to beat Lester Doctor. The latter delayed the star, considerably by his fractious behavior and through the final sixteenth tired badly. Lady Audrey proved to be the first successful choice of the afternoon. Our Star, racing for James Robertson, furnished a surprise when she was winner of the sixth race, at a mile and a sixteenth, in a drive from T. Calcinas Skirmish, while W. J. Wolfes Quecreek was third. The winner followed the pacemaker from the start and when well settled in the stretch went to the front, after disposing of Quecreek, but was hard pressed to outlast Continued on twelfth page. VICTORY FOR SUMPTER Continued from first page. Skirmish. The latter met Avith some early interference, closed Avith a rush and Avas Avearing the Avinner down. Quecreek lasted long enough to saAe the third portion of the purse from Smarty. Jv. K. Bryson supplied the winner of the Highway Claiming Handicap, at one and one-sixteenth miles, Avhen Guelph came from behind to Avin AA-ith ease from J. H. Stotlers Faenza, Avhile B. B. Williams Ten Eyck Avas third. Guelph was outrun the first part, but gained steadily Avhen called upon and Avhen turning for home disposed of Faenza, to Avin by a Avide margin. Faenza raced forwardly from the start, but Avas forced to iVce next to the inner rail all the Avay, and as a result he tired badly through the final sixteenth. Ten Eyck Avas taken wide the biggest part of the race, and- Avas a driving third.
