SARATOGA STAKES CLOSING Yesterday Last Day to Enter for 1925 and 1926 Events. Association Anticipates Record Number of Nominations When Mail Returns Are Received. NEW YORK, N. Y., Dec. 1. With a bumper list of nominations for their stakes duo to close today, already on hand, the Saratoga Association for the Improvement of the Breed of Horses hopes to establish a record surpassing any previous year when the last returns have come from California and other distant points. In addition to the Hopeful, the United States Hotel, Grand Union Hotel, Spinaway, Consolation and Saratoga Sales Stakes and the Grab Bag Handicap, all of which will be decided in 1925, nominations for the historic Travers and Alabama and the Saratoga Sales Stakes all for three-year-olds, to be run in 192C will ciose at the same time. Because the Saratoga meeting is held at a time when there is a let-up in Kentucky and the principal meetings in Canada are over until September, there is a desire on the part of turfmen in all parts of the United States and Canada to race at Saratoga Springs. The climate and water do wonders for horses jaded rtith early campaigning and the program is so rich and varied that abun-1 dant opportunities are afforded for owners to win substantial sums during the twenty-six day period. The Hopeful Stakes, which has a prospective value of 0,000 or more for next year, is sure to attract the entry of almost every good colt and filly in the- country. It is one of the richest prizes of the year and its winning goes a long way toward defraying the expenses of even the largest establishment, while a victory spells prosperity to an organization of modest proportions. In recent years it has gone to so-called small stables, Continued on twelfth oage. SARATOGA STAKES CLOSING Continued from first page. when Diogenes and Master Charlie were successful. The Grand Union Hotel, the United States Hotel and Spinaway Stakes are fixtures of value also, each being worth from ,000 to 2,000. They are worth while races from every point of view and rank among the leading attractions of the meeting. The Travers and Alabama have lon occupied a place among the great races of the American turf. Both carry a rich money value, but aside from that they have tradition and character and no owner with a good colt or filly will let the chance of winning either of them pass by for want of an entry. The nominations for the Travers and Alabama of 1926 are for yearlings and Mr. Schaumburg is confident, in view of the entry for the Belmont Stakes and -Coaching Club American Oaks, that the totals for the Saratoga three-year-olds fixtures will equal those of the Belmont Park fixture," whose brilliant- showing brought so much pleasure to the Westchester management.
