REVIEW OF MARYLAND RACING SEASON OF 1924 , g Total Distribution in Stakes and Purses for Year Amounts to ,378,890 H. C. "Bud" Fisher Largest Winner on Circuit Nellie Morse Tops the Horses J. Maiben and J. Wallace in Tie for Riding Honors, Each With Forty-Five Winners I - ! Practically negligible in racing statistics twenty-five years back, Maryland has so improved its ways and repute as a racing field that it fairly exudes wealth and temptation to owners of good race horses. Nobody questions the exceeding importance of Maryland racing at the present time. "With its Preakness Stakes, for three-year-olds;" its Pimlico Futurity, for two-year-olds, and its Washington Handicap for three-year-olds and over, it yields precedence to no other of our racing fields in the value and importance of its major-inducements to owners. Yet in 1900 all that Maryland had to offer turfmen was a meeting of two days at Pimlico for small purses and mainly devoted to jumping races, also a fair at Frederick, where some races for runners were on the program. To this meager showing the J1.37S.S90 divided among winning owners this year is in vivid contrast. "While there was no great disparity in the aggregate of money distributed in 1923 and 1924, there was a modest gain of 526, 10S registered in behalf of the present year. In the matter of daily distribution Pimlico exceeded its best previous record. The same is true of Laurel and Bowie, but the high record at Havre de Grace in that respect was made in 1921. All of the best horses of the time raced over the Maryland tracks, to the great delight of the huge assemblages in daily attendance. , Following are interesting particulars of a memorable turf campaign: v. v. 5! 5 H 3 z and S K - C? This is clearly indicated in the winnings of the successful stables. There were two owners that won over 0,000 each, three over 0,000 each, three over 0,000 each and seven over 0,000 each. The honor of heading the list fell to the noted cartoonist, II. C. "Bud" Fisher, with 8,950 to his credit, due to the early spring successes of his filly, Nellie Morse. Second place was won by Marshall Field III., chiefly because of Stimulus Aictory in the rich Pimlico Futurity. The Field winnings totaled 0,520. The Glen Kiddle Farm, with 9,925, J. E. Griffith, with 2,410, J. S. Cosden, with 0,C75, II. P. "Whitney, with 9,090, A. C. Bostwick, with 9,010 and J. E. "Widencr, with 5,290 were the other big winners on the circuit. J. S. Cosden enjoys the distinction of having won more races othan any other owner during the year in Maryland, his horses finishing first in twenty-one, while those of II. P. "Whitney accounted for nineteen. The following is a record of the owners who won ,000 or more over the Maryland tracks during 1924 : Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt. Fisher, II. "Bud" Fishers Nellie Morse, chiefly because of her success in the rich Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in the spring, Avas the largest money Avinner among the horses cam- paigning over the Maryland tracks during the present year. Nellie Morse Avon three races and S,750. Stimulus, the crack two- year-old belonging to Marshall Field, only captured one race in Maryland, but that was the -aluable Pimlico Futurity, worth 9,220 to the winner. As a result of that Aictory Stimulus is second to Nellie Morse on the list of winners in Maryland. Another big Avinner on that circuit Avas Single Foot, with 0,2G0 to his credit as the result of seven triumphant races and finishing second in two others. Big Blaze with 1,500. Dona-ghee Avith 7,S50 and Chacolet with 4,S10, were among others that carried off some of the prize money distributed during the spring and fall meetings at the four big Maryland tracks.
