BEFITTING TESTIMONIAL Nursery Stud Stallion, Fair Play, Leading Sire of Year at Time of Major August Belmonts Death Records of Thirty Leaders of 1924 . According to John E. Madden, who for years has led our American breeders, the late August Belmont was unquestionably the most successful student of thoroughbred lines in America. "Indeed, I do not exaggerate," said Mr. Madden, "in asserting that, he had more success in breeding great horses than any breeder in the world." Surely no other breeder ever produced two such marvelous race horses as were Man o War and Tracery. They alone would have been sufficient to set the seal to his fame as a breeder, but there were more, the names of which are inscribed among the foremost racers of England, France and the United States. It was a co-incident and may be construed as a befitting testimonial to the master of Nursery Stud that at the time of his death Fair Play, the sire of Man o War and a great race horse himself, was the leading American stallion of the year. Fair Play has played an important part in the success of Major Belmont as a breeder. Not only did Fair Play give to American racing the mighty Man o AVar but such stars as Mad Hatter, Mad Play, Ladkin, My Play, Lucky .Play. Osprey. Stromboli, Messenger, Dunlin and a host of others that were remarkably successful. From January 1 to and including the racing of November 30 the get of Fair Play, thirty-four in number, had won eighty-two races and S2,7G4. Mad Play was the largest contributor to that total with winnings of 4,190 to his credit. Ladkin, which raced in Mr. Belmonts own colors and was one of the best three-year-olds of the year, accounted for ,S03; Bracadale, T-SO; My Play, S,030; Mad Hatter. 7.S90; Catalan, 4,140; Lucky Play, C,G75, and Osprey, 0,7S0. It is a fine record for Mr. Belmonts leading stallion, which lias achieved greater success in the stud than he did on the race course, though he was a smasher of the first class. The prolific Ballot is second to Fair Play on the sire list. Seventy-three sons and daughters of that fine race horse and successful sire Avon 192 races and 71,900 up to Continued on ninth page. , I J i 1 j , . ! 1 ; - 1 1 I i . ; 1 . 1 : 1 i : ! 1 1 1 , ; ! , J 1 1 . Chilhowee, the best racer Ballot has as yet sent into our racing; was the largest money -winner of that big group, his sensational victories during the campaign of 1924 bringing monetary returns of 5,130. Mr. Mutt won 6,100; Ballot Brush, 1,058; ten others contributing over ,000 each, and the remainder adding sums ranging from 0 to ,000. The Ballot family is a large one, hardy, and seemingly thrives on plenty of racing. The imported stallion Wrack, -which A. B. Hancock brought to the United States some few years back, has made a wonderful reputation since entering the stud in this country. He is third on this years list of leaders, sixty-six of his progeny having won 150 races and 07,579. The-two-year-old, Single Foot, was the chief winner among Wracks sons and daughters, that promising young racer having accounted for 4,277 during a strenuous season of racing. Little Chief contributed 9,692, while Cloudland Avon ,725, Golden Rule ,160, Caligula ,975, Ebb Tide ,890, Bullseye ,500, Virginius ,260 and Wrackhorn ,200. The dead Ultimus, for which the late Major Daingerfield predicted a brilliant future in the stud, and Avhich Avas in a measure fulfilled before death intervened, is fourth with 02,174, Avon by forty-two of his representatives during the course of the years racing. Stimulus, one of the stars of this years juA-enile division, added lustre to the fame of his departed daddy, his nine Aictories out of fourteen starts being responsible for 7,598 of the amount AAon by the offspring of his sire.
