Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Dec. 17, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Joe McLennan will manage jockey Winnie OConnor and make his engagements at New Orleans until the latter leaves for France. W. S. Williams has secured second call on jockey Nicol for the remainder of the New Orleans meeting on the colts Rams Horn and Phil Finch. The Crescent City Handicap was the big attraction of the Saturday afternoon program and fell to the lightly weighted Luralight, bay daughter of Lamplighter and Lura F., that races in the colors of J. F. Davis and Co. Luralight appeared sore when going to the post, but after a half mile of racing suddenly warmed out of it and, dropping in behind the pacemaker, Garnish, followed him closely to the mile post, where she challenged him and in a furious drive wore him down and at the end was going away a winner by three lengths. Garnish, while unable to cope with the winner, still had enough left to stall off the closing rush of Aladdin. The latter was in third position practically all the way and for a while headed Luralight at the mile post, but dropped back, only to come again in the stretch. The distance was tine mile and a quarter and the net value to ihe winner was ,100. Six started.
