Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Dec. 22, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Jockey Dave. Nicol was much in evidence at New Orleans today. He rode Foxmead, Kings Trophy and Reliance to victory; was a good second on Green Gown and finished fourth on Mrs. Frank Foster, his only other mount. Nicol has ridden 191 winners this year. His percentage is a fraction better than .23. Jockey Hildebrand is having a tough time scoring that one winner necessary to the break- ing of Charley Reiffs record. When, on Tuesday, he rode two winners out of three mounts j and brought his total to 292 for the year, his friends said: "Hildys got a cinch on beating Rciffs mark now. Hell make it 293 tomorrow sure. Then watch him go to the 300 by the time the bells begin to ring out the old year." But the fates arc not always kind to the mighty; neither does fortune always smile upon those that put forth their best energies. With his last ten mounts the best Hildebrand has been able to do was two seconds. Wednesday he had six mounts, rode two seconds, two thirds and two unplaced. Out of four mounts today he got one third and thrcs unplaced. From Los Angeles comes a belated story of how it cost Hildebrand 0 to "take a fall out of Moriarity," a fellow rider. The punch was delivered in the quarters for riders at Ascot Park last Friday afternoon and these are the tales told by the two after "Hildy" had been assessed a half century note by Judge Hamilton: "That swell mug," said Moriarity, "kept yelling at me in races to pull out and let him through, and when I wouldnt do it he called me names. Then when wc galloped back to tli2 stand after that last race he told me he would land one on my jaw. He made good when wc got to the jocks room." "This boy, Moriarity, has been cutting me off in races," said Hildebrand. I gave him fair warning that I wouuld take a crack at him if he did it again. When he repeated the offense I gave hini what I had promised. Thats all there is to it."
