J j J i j i j j DURNELL VISITOR AT DOWNS ♦ American Turfman Is Called to! Louisville Because of Death of Father — Visits Course. LOUISY1LLE, Ky.. April 5.— C. E. "Boots" Durnell, internationally known horseman, who came here from Xew York to attend the funeral of his father, Marcellus I urnell. who; died at the home of Mrs. Susie Xorris, a daughter, in Xew Albany, was among the last week visitors at Churchill Downs, being I accompanied by Thomas Xugent. well-known i Ix uisville sportsman and boyhood friend of Durnell. Mr. Durnell is a native of Louisville, and! it was here where he first entered upon his | turf career, when he galloped and rede horses for his father, who, forty years ago, | was a horseman of note. The younger IHir-j nell also was employed as a youth by the late W. T. Scoggan, another famous horse-1 man of his day, and father-in-law of trainer Lon Jones. Mr. Durnell stated that he will leave shortly for Roumania, where he has a good sized stable being trained by his brother. The Roumanian racing season started last Sunday. Mr. Durnell has quite a number of I higb priced mares that he bought in England, among the number being two by the noted Spearmint. These are now at one of the Xew York tracks, but they will be shipped to Kentucky as soon as their owner can arrange for the purchase of a suitable farm. Mr. Durnell has owned and trained some of the best horses that raced in this country, I and for seme time was in partnership with Bail Herz. He also handled the big stable belonging to J. W. Gates. Durnell is no stranger to Churchill Downs, for he won the Derby over that course with Elwood in 1904.
