j I I | j I I j I | j j I | | W. E. APPLEGATES VICTORY • His Colors First, Third and Fourth in Tijuana Futurity. ♦ Smacker, Daughter of Cudgel. Winner of Big Two-Year-Old Stake of Tijuana Meeting. ♦ SAX DIEGO, Cal., April 5.— W. E. Apple-gate, the Kentucky turfman, who has been quite successful here this winter, added one of the big turf prizes of the meeting to his list of successes when his Smacker, a daughter of Cudgel— Feeatherwit, by Colin, carried off the Tijuana Futurity at the Mexican track this afternoon. This is the race in which Master Charlie attracted the attention of the turf world last year and his subsequent victories in the East and Kentucky made him the largest money-winning two-year-old of 1**24. Smacker had started three times previously to this afternoons big contest and, after finishing second in her initial appearance under colors, easily won in her other two starts, so todays triumph was her third straight j and greatest. Smacker, with her three stablesmates, Big I Sweep, Three Sixty and Eleven Sixty, ruled j prohibitive favorites and she ran accordingly, j I She was ridden by Pete Walls and, taking j the lead with the rise of the barrier, easily ] held sway throughout. Her two stable companions. Big Sweep and Three Sixty, raced in closest pursuit, but right at the end Russell Gardner, after a rough early journey, squeezed through and earned second place in the last stride. Big Sweep was third and Three Sixty fourth. The winners share of the stake amounted to ,860, the second horse received ,000, while third and fourth received 50 and 50 respectively. The ! Applegate stable, as a result of its represen- | tatives finishing first, third and fourth, re-l ! ceived the goodly sum of 0,860. OPKXER TO WAR WINNER. A mile and seventy yards dash opened the afternoons entertainment and W. C. Weant [ furnished the victor in War Winner, with T. J. Pendergast second and Blue Belle third. ! War Winner showed the most speed and led all the way. easily holding his rivals safe ; at all stages. T. J. Pendargast did his best ; and outgamed Blue Belle after a long hard drive. The latter made up ground steadily, but evidently did not favor the going. Marse j John saved ground throughout and finished ! fast. Sunbow. from the stable of Hall and Debolt, easily accounted for the second race, anothei I dash at a mile and seventy yards. Second i place fell to Hackamore and third to Louis. ! Eight faced the starter and they were away, | without delay. Sunbow went to the front ! after indulging Mannikin II. for a half and won easily though Griffin took no chances and kept at him all through the stretch. I Hackamore, always close up, outgamed the j others and finished stoutly. Louis came i from far back on the outside, closing a big gap, to earn third money. Mannikin II. was; thoroughly done after going a half. Olympiad I loomed up strong on the far turn, then quit. J The mile and a quarter of the third race provided a decided upset in the defeat of Madam Yennie and a corresponding surprise in the victory of Malvern. The latter was neglected in the betting, while Madam Yennie was a hot favorite with Acceleration the second choice. It was Malvern all the way. Sehaefer took him to the front with the rise of the 1 arrier and kept him there all the way. He was never in danger of defeat and had a three-lengths winning margin at the end. Madam Yennie was poorly ridden ; allowed to drop out of it while leaving the back stretch, then raced around on the outside on the last turn, but tired in the j J i last sixteenth. Acceleration probably made! her move too soon, for she gave way readily j i in the stretch. Preservator was taken the j j short way and finished fast and gamely. __. 1 A ■
