TIJUANA CUP TO SUNSPERO ♦ Four-Year-Old Son of Sun Briar First in Two -Mile Feature. — — — • Defeats All Over, Blarney Stone and Others in Last Stake Event of the Long Tijuana Winter Meeting. • TIJUANA. Mex., April 12.— Sunspero. the four-year-old son of Sun Briar — Espero. bred by W. S. Kilmer at his noted Sun Briar Court in New York State, stamped himself as a long distance performer of merit when he won the valuable Tijuana Cup this afternoon before a capacity crowd that came from far and wide to see the decision of the last stake race of the long winter meeting, which ends here with the racing of next Sunday. It was Dr. Clark that set the pace in the Tijuana Cup. with Little Chief and Sunspero nearest in pursuit. After Little Chief dropped out and Dr. Clark tired Sunspero. I which was fortunate in racing on the inside | all the way. took command and gamely out- i lasted All Over in a clcse finish. The latter | ran a sensational race, coming from far1 hack with a rush that just failed to bring j victory. Blarney Stone also ran a good race, ; closing a big gap to earn third place in the . last stride. The opening mile and seventy yards dash I fell to the favorite. Scatter Shot, which beat . Shasta Springs and Lady Barrett in a hotly ! contested finish. Scatter Shot was well j placed early and favored by light weight, handily overhauled the pacemaker when | called on and outlasted Shasta Springs when the latter challenged. Shasta Springs forced the pace, was a contender throughout and ■ hung on well. Lady Barrett set a good pace, but tired in the stretch. The second race was another mile and seventy yards dash and again the favorite I was victorious when Harry Maxim was first with Sea Green and Johnny OConnell j finishing second and third respectively. Harry Maxim waited back of het pacemaker | and getting through an opening in the stretch finished up fast and had enough to stall off the rapidly gaining Sea Green. The latter lost considerable ground in the race. | but finished fast and gave the winner a hot battle for the i urse. Johnny OConnell was a forward contender all the way, and ap- ] peared to be the winner after taking the j lead, but tired a trifle near the finish though gamely fighting it out to the last. The Leslie Stable furnished the winner of j the third race in Lady Berrilldon, which i shared favoritism with Cleg and Joe Pat- ton. the latter pair taking down the minor portions of the purse. Lady Berrilldon be- ! gan fast, but permitted Cleg to set the I pace to the last turn, where she easily overhauled her and drew out handily. Cleg was easily second best and had no serious opposition for second place. Joe Patton raced forwardly all the way. but did not seriously threaten the leading pair. George Drumhellers colors were in front :n the fourth when Lure of Gold carried them to victory over Clarkson, Convent and six others. The winner was the pacemaker an l, ! going along at a fast clip raced Recruit into defeat and then held Clarkson safe when the latter moved up fast in the last eighth. The latter dropped back and was compelled to race wide, but finished fast and. with better racing luck, might have won. Convent was a forward contender at all stages and hung on well in the stretch. Grayson could not keep up.
