PTOLEMY SUFFERS DEFEAT Favorite for Epsom Derby Beaten at Longchamps — American Jockey Wins French Stake. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. PARIS, France, May 18. — Captain Jefferson Davis Conns Ptolemy, which has been the choice for the Epsom Derby since l*ica-roon went wrong, was beaten by the outsider. Faraway, in the Poule dEssai Den Poulains at Longchamps yesterday. The Conn three-year-old did not show enough quality to indicate that he has a chance in the big English classic. Stern, who rode Ptolmey in the race Sunday, will also ride the colt in the Epsom Derby. It has been reported that Steve Donoghue was to have the mount, but he is to ride Manna, the Two Thousand Guineas winner, instead. There was an enormous crowd at Long-champs for the racing in spite of the fact that the weather was showery, George D. Widener, F. R. Hitchcock and A K. Ma-comber were among the Americans present. The French One Thousand Guineas was won by Baron Hdouard de Rothschilds La Dame Trefle, ridden by the American jockey I Mali McGee. Joseph E. Wideners Perven-| cheres, with ONeill up, was second, and M. Matossians La Sabaiu ra third. I,a Dame Trefle won by half a length in a drive. Ogdon Mills Mindas won the Prix Bessian at St. Cloud. Saturday.
