UNION CLAIMING STAKES Feature Attraction of Mondays Program at Aqueduct Permanent Wave the Winner Cartoonist CartoonistBeats Beats Catalan in the Sir Walter WalterHandicap Handicap NEW YORK N Y June 22 For a Mon ¬ day offering the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct featured the Union Claiming Stakes over the seveneighths distance It fell to J J Faheys Permanent Wave and Robert L Gerrys Emissary saved second place from William Daniels John T D and the Greentree Stables Slirrup Cup was a fast running fourth fourthThe The weather was ideal for the sport and a crowd of goodly proportions turned out Besides the Union there were five other I contests of decided interest and altogether the entertainment was up to the Aqueduct standard Little time was lost at the barrier for the Union and when it rose Maiben was par ¬ ticularly alert with Permanent Wave send ¬ ing her way in the lead Emissary was right after her and Walter E was showing the way lo the others Maiben made every use of the speed of Permanent Wave and he soon had her clear of her company Emis ¬ sary continued to lead the others when the stretch was reached but Walter E had surrendered his position to Kathleen Crosby Going to the stretch turn this filly was going exceedingly well but in the long run through the stretch she tired badly to eventually finish last Emissary stuck to second place with resolute courage but he could not catch Permanent Wave and she was home first by four lengths Then in the final eighth John T D after being outrun early found his way through on the inner rail to finish well lapped on the Gerry plater and two lengths before Stirrup Cup CupBud Bud Fishers Cartoonist won the best race of the day when he took the measure of the j Bedford Farm Stables Catalan in the mile I and a sixteenth of the Sir Walter Handicap This brought out only five starters but it was a good spectacle and at the end Catalan was close enough to furnish a thrill Flames from the Belalr Stud was third with Walter J Salmons Vigil fourth and A J Bedells Vulcain Park was a distant last having been outrun all the way wayFrom From a good start Kellum at once went out to set the pace with Cartoonist while Ambrose elected to wait with Catalan For the first quarter Vulcain Park was second on sufferance and Flames was showing the way to Catalan But Vulcain Park soon dropped out of the picture and then Flames moved into second place racing at the heels oft Cartoonist CartoonistAmbrose I Ambrose delayed his move with Catalan until the stretch was reached There he moved up on the outside and as Stevens called on Flames the son of Wrack swerved j over to the inside back of Cartoonist and he tired badly under a drive In the mean ¬ j time Catalan was drawing up on Cartoonist I but the son of Celt had something left for j that last furlong and when Kellum called i 1 on him vigorously he was still half a length to the good at the end Catalan beat the tired Flames three lengths for second place and Vigil was four lengths further away j jIt j It was a stirring finish that came with 1 I the running of the sixth race in which 1 W J Salmons Flight of Time ridden by jockey J Maiben barely managed to outstay G A Cochrans Flat Iron while Centrifugal was third
