BROADWAY JONES WINS THE LATONIA DERBY Captures Valuable Fixture for His Breeder and Owner E R Bradley Takes Prize of 25225 After Sensational Stretch StretchStruggle Struggle With King Nadi J B Res pess Progress Finishes Third LATONIA Ky June 27 Broadway Jones bearing the white and green silks of Edward Fc Bradleys idle Hour Stock Farm Stable was winner of the trying mile and a half of the Latonia Derby this afternoon after a stirring stretch battle with J J Troxlers King Nadi Ten lengths farther away J B Respess maiden Progress beat C W Riedingers Caractus for third with Bud Fishers Swope the invader from New York finishing fifth The race was worth 25225 to the winner andBroadway Jones raced the mile and a half in 231 It was one of the largest fields that ever went to the post for the Latonia Derby with eleven starting and it was also the first time that Mr Bradley has seen his silks victorious in this fixture The race was a truly run one in that no starter seemed to suffer any unusual inter ¬ ference and while Kellum may be criticized for the use he made of Swope in the early stages Broadway Jones proved himself a worthy son of Black Toney and Vaila from the courageous manner in which he with ¬ stood the rush of King Nadi through the closing stages of the contest contestThe The victory was a tremendously popular one with the crowd and when II Meyer brought his mount back to the scales ho had to submit to a barrage from the movie camera after the gallant winner had been decorated with the floral collar that is a part of the ceremony after the running of the big prize prizeSWOPE SWOPE EXCESSIVELY USED USEDLittle Little time was lost at the barrier and starter Hamilton obtained an excellent send off for the field Both Broadway Jones and Swope had outside positions and it was Step Along that jumped into the lead at the rise of the barrier Kellum showing too much haste for a mile and a half journey sent Swope around the outside until he had him alongside the Grabner colt and while Broad way Jones also moved up some Meyer had him under restraint and galloping strongly Stutts was not far away with King Nadi and had a good hold of his mount The others followed in fairly close order though Captain Hal and Flying Ebony both some ¬ what noted for speed were far back from the pace Frogress was another that was avoiding the early pace pacePassing Passing the stand the first time it was Swope that was showing the way and Kellum had him right against the inner rail saving all ground possible The colt was galloping so fast that there was an excuse for his showing the way Step Along was well lapped on the son of Fair Play and when the back stretch was reached he headed Swope but it was only for a few strides when Swope again showed his nose in front frontThen Then as the field swung out of the back stretch there came changes in the positions when Broadway Jones asked to run for the first time quickly moved to the leaders and on by Stutts moved at the same time with King Nadi and he closely followed the Brad ¬ ley colt in his dash into the command while Progress began to work his way up in reso ¬ lute fashion Swope was dropping back well beaten when the others swept by while Step Along was soon swallowed up by the charge chargeSPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR FINISH FINISHSwinging Swinging for home Broadway Jones was showing the way by a length but King Nadi was responding gamely to thG call of Stutts and the pair of them quickly drew away from the others For an instant it seemed that King Nadi would surely catch Broadway Jones but with rare courage the bay held to his task and as he swept over the line he was still a neck to the good This stretch brush had taken the pair of them out ten lengths before the fastfinishing Progress and he in turn was eight lengths before Caractus which only beat Swope by a neck Back of these came Deeming winner of the Kentucky Oaks Old Slip Flying Ebony winner of the Kentucky Derby Step Along and Millwick and Captain Hal pulled up in last place Step placeStep Along came out of the runing a bit lame but the others of the company pulled up apparently sound and no excuse could be offered for any one of them The hopes of those that desired mud to favor King Nadi went a glimmering as the day wore on and before the horses were called out for the big prize the skies had cleared and conditions were ideal for tho running even though they did not suit tho followers JamesThere of the son of King James There have been larger crowds for the La tonia Derby than that which thronged tho beautiful course this afternoon but it was an immense throng that journeyed to the course Continued on sixteenth pace BROADWAY JONES WINNER Continued from first page and there was a goodly attendance of sports ¬ men from afar Special trains brought en ¬ thusiasts from Louisville Indianapolis Day ¬ ton and Lexington Chicago and New York were numerously represented while Mary ¬ land had its delegation on hand The field for the rich prize was admittedly below the usual Latonia Derby average in quality but it was considered so evenly bal ¬ anced in the matter of class that it added something to the interest There was no out ¬ standing threeyearold in the company and for that reason the adherents of this or that candidate were imbued with that much greater confidence Rain threatened all through the early forenoon hours and it was a kind that brought both hope and appre ¬ hension Those who pinned their faith on J J Troxlers King Nadi hoped for the down ¬ pour while Alex Gordon and his friends that expected great things of Bud Fishers Swope were just as anxious that there should bo no downpour for it would run the chances of the son of Fair Play PlayTho Tho opening race found Pindar Peel and Sandhurst both outstanding favorites going down to defeat when Quince Garden won handily Sandhurst under skillful riding suc ceeded in outstaying Dusty Mary for second place The latter attended by Bobs Mary was the leader in the early stages and at one period in the stretchit looked as if Dusty Mary would be the victress She tired under a poorly judged ride and it cost her second place when Sandhurst slipped through next the inner rail and got to the finish t few inches in advance of her Quince Garden though prominent most of the way only gained the verdict in the last seventy yards Pindar Peels showing was a dull one anil he was far out of it for the entire journey The maiden fillies that started in the second race furnished a spectacular strug ¬ gle Lotus and Aileen P racing as a team in the first half mile and were succeeded near the finish by Percussion and Christmas Morning The latter pair battled it furir ously to the finish Peercussion winning by a short margin Girl o My Heeart came with a rush in the last sixteenth to head Aileen P and Lotus Percussion was fa ¬ vored with Christmas Morning aso absorb ¬ ing an extensive play playThe The third race at a mile and threesix ¬ teenths brought to the post a highly regarded band of platers and it furnished a big upset by the victory of Marcelline This one has been beaten off in four of his last starts but he developed sudden good form today and won with ease from Wong Bok and Tip Toe Inn The nine starters ex ¬ cepting Radio which broke down raced closely grouped for mcst of the way Mar ¬ celline coming steadily at the stretch turn and drawing out in the last sixteenth Wong Bok was a sufferer by interference in the early stages but worked his way to the front steadily in tho stretch but was not good enough to overhaul Marcelline Tip Toe Inn was another to show improved form over her last start
