FIRST IN QUEBEC DERBY Harry Baker Easily Accounts for Closing Day Feature at Dorval Largest Crowd of Recent Years Present Despite Threatening Weather Doable for 8 N Holmam MONTREAL Que June 27 Harry Baker the son ofSunstar that races in the colors of the Pennsylvania sportsman P F Joyce won the Quebec Derby at Dorval Park this afternoon when he beat a band of the best threeyearolds racing in Canada in handy fashion Harry Baker was ridden by J Butwell followed the pacemaker until mak ¬ ing the turn into the home stretch where he went to the front with a rush and in the final eighth drew away into a six lengths lead Edisto was second three lengths in front of Tangara Vblante was fourth beat ¬ en a head for third money moneyIt It was a brilliant gathering that turned out to witness the running of the Derby and incidentally it marked the closing of the Dorval Jockey Clubs first meeting of 1925 teenth with 5000 added There were six starters and the Seagram colt was the public choice choiceThe The club provided an attractive program Besides the Derby additional attractions were the Hurricane Handicap and the Au Revoir Purse The crowd was the largest that witnessed the running of a race in these parts in several years 7500 being present This too despite cloudy weather which threatened rain at any minute Juse before the running of the big race the sun came out outNassau Nassau scored a double for the S N Hoi man stable when he won the Au Revoir purse He followed Redstone until straight ¬ ened out on the back stretch when he moved up fast on the outside and rounding the far turn drew away into a long lead Nassau was tiring at the end and was ridden out to beat Kings Ransom by a length and a half halfBilly Billy Welch started out like a winner In the first race He sprinted into command ¬ ing lead in the first eighth and was four lengths in front of Towtons Rose Rounding the far turn the latter moved up stoutly and taking command led for the remainder of the way At the eighth post she stalled off determined opposition from Bonafide and in a driving finish came again and beat the latter by three parts of a length Maure Cohen was third thirdMabel Mabel K made all of the pace in the second race and at the finish was three parts of a length in front of Fighting Cook The latter was shuffled back soon after the start but slipped through on the inside in the stretch run and finished with good courage to beat Reliable by a neck for the second place
